As a millennial it feels like we had the puurfect time with IT and tech growing upFor example we did play outside and a little later computers became more "normal" so a bit of both worldsAlso much was a wild west and it was much issue fixing to even get started so we learned a lot!Nowadays it's mostly simplified GUI's and it does bring a lot of ease but it also takes away the requirement for much of the basic knowledge

@stux Given your similarity of feeling you'd have loved being gen-x, too.

@stux boomers played with the hardware and operating systems, gen x played with applications and Web sites, millennials played with social platforms, gen z are locked up in walled gardens.

@stux Yes, this. I’ve often spoken to friends and colleagues how lucky I feel being born in ‘74. I was there for the whole ride, and still going 🦾😀

@stux I have a non ICT educated / interested adult person in my house: the sheer horror of slowness and never ending company forced upgrades ( MS and Dell ) and planned or spontaneous reboots...

@stux yep, early GenX here, I was playing with basic electronics at 10 and through into 68000 and Z80 stuff.Lots of basic stuff learned and a view of the world that we can each do any of it if we want. Just time and interest needed. It's still all there in view if we all want to look, but some have lost the taste for finding out and doing your own stuff. It's like most of us don't make tools any more, which is odd for a species once defined as The Tool Maker.

@stux GenX, but totally agree with this. When I turned on the first computer I owned it would just present a blinking cursor at a BASIC prompt. To get it to do anything interesting or useful took a bit of work. Driven by curiosity I learned a ton. But the biggest shift was when the Internet went mainstream and became a thing carried in our pockets wherever we go. The childhood experience of IT now involves being tracked and prodded by multi-billion dollar companies, 24/7.

@stux Ecch... the Millenials came of age with good solid processors such as 6502 and reasonably reliable peripherals, so they didn't have to be master mechanics to do the simplest things. My kids were Millenials. The landmarks in that landscape were before cell phones and after cell phones.
