Everything is not fake. Some things are real.Everything is not a lie. Some things are true."They" don't always lie, some of them lie some of the time, others lie most of the time, and a few lie infrequently and are sincerely distressed when in error. Refrains of "it's all lies" & "everything is fake" on facebook were one of the most disturbing things about the place. It's not like people don't know something is broken. They see it, but some seem to think it's everything.

"It's all fake."Is what you get if you point out that a particular thing is fake and give a reason why."It's all lies."Is the response to giving evidence for why something is a lie. And it applies to YOU and your nerdy little attempt at debunking. The lie is a lie and so are the responses debunking it. Things simply cannot be known... it's... an abyss.

@futurebird they dislike the meaning of what you say, so they attack the concept of meaning itself.Mental midgets.

@cykonot It's a kind of nihilism for the simple notion of knowing things. Oh? You say this thing is untrue? Well, I'll drink to that and do you one better NOTHING is true.

@futurebird Saw this really frustrating twitter screenshot going around where the EIC of a news source was talking about how sustained protests of the Supreme Court were needed, and someone responded to say that people protested at the Supreme Court "you bastards" called them terrorists. And this got super widely shared like, haha, great dunk!So I spend 3 seconds searching and discover this EIC's site was basically the only news outlet to defend/praise the SC home protestors

@futurebird "You're not the boss of me! Just because you have 'logic' and 'facts' on your side doesn't make you GOD. 'Intellectuals' with 'PHDs' think they know EVERYTHING!"Petulant children. I honestly think we need to weaken the taboo of just calling people dumb cuz engaging with them IS NOT working lol

@futurebird True, but sometimes "they" do lie whenever they get the chance, and this is part of a very conscious strategy. https://xahteiwi.eu/blog/2020/02/04/why-do-they-always-lie/

@futurebird @cykonot It's a way of covering themselves with permission to do whatever they want. Same goes with things like corrupt officials. "Sure our guy is corrupt, but *all* politicians are corrupt, so I'll take the corrupt guy who agrees with me."

@cykonot @futurebird I think that’s true often, but not always. There’s something that happens when you’re an adolescent where you realize that rules are made up, and enforcement isn’t consistent. For most, that means a period of thinking that all rules are equally nonsense. Eventually most people grow out of that and start recognizing different rules have different value, etc.I think lots of people thought they knew who to believe and who not to, and their reaction to finding out they were wrong is to assume all people and organizations with power are constantly lying all the time. The problem is that it’s much harder to, as an adult, get past that phase to the other side. You don’t have the consequence of rule-breaking to prompt you, and defaulting to distrust has the benefit of preventing a feeling of betrayal when you trust the long person.I don’t know how many of those responses are from these people, or how to reach them, but I’m sure they’re there.

@futurebird So, who were trying to explain things at FB? Random bots from OpenAI farm?Kremlin "organic bots" from "Internet Researches Institute" troll farm in St. Petersburg?Really, no need to spend time on _random_ accounts for whom you even can't be sure there are real people behind it.We all should stop spending priceless time on internet trying convince an AI bot or a disinfo troll from a Kremlin farm.Time to care seriously about yourself and few people nearby we really know & connected

@futurebird "It's all lies" and "it's all fake", both sounding hysterical tone, sounds like quotes from a Kremlin trolls playbook/guides (or "metodicka").I have FB account, more or less because here in Georgia country 95% of population have them. I am there mostly to communicate with some businesses, read statements of local politicians, or for few (literally few) connections w people who don't want go somewhere else.🧵

@futurebird As soon as I discovered phenomena of Kremlin troll farms, I ban anything that repeat Kremlin lies. I used for some time the great EUvsDisinfo to track what these lies are about but eventually Kremlin just start to repeat same narratives over and over. Some may say that I am live into some happy bubble where trolls are banned away but hey, we have only 24 hours per day to sleep and leave, and spending it on convincing a bot or troll is not a best thing to do, I guess.

@futurebird I keep thinking of Sartre and Arendt."They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert.""The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is ... people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist".And so on.

@futurebird when the rate of lying by nominal authorities exceeds the rate of lying you experience in your day to day life, it starts creating some very broken naïve heuristics. The fact that with so much modern media you need a kind of "low pass filter" to toss out professional liars makes media literacy out of reach for a lot of people, and you get exactly the results you're complaining about.

"This cynicism reaches every corner of society. Saturating conversations at work, every discussion of politics and personal life, everyone obliged to give the impression that 'we know' what games are being played, what politicians are 'really' up to…'Nobody is pulling the wool over my eyes'. Cynicism is a joke..."The Pleasure Tendency, 'The Fatuousness of Cynicism', Leeds, UK, 1987https://slackbastard.anarchobase.com/?p=30586@futurebird
