The misinformation that will be spread here once Mastodon implements reply limiting is gonna be astronomical....🤦♂️People already don't want you to shut down their misinformation campaigns and will berate you. @BeAware totally agree. reply limiting shouldn't exist, replies should be ranked ala reddit and the norm should be no admin blocks unless the person is being abusive.

@wjmaggos Facts. Nostr fixes these things, but nobody is there yet and there's a bigger knowledge barrier to entry.I have hopes that more people on Fedi will have their own instances eventually so that the protocol gets more decentralized and people have more power.

@wjmaggos @BeAware Hard disagree with this. Way too many people (especially black people) have been driven off the Fediverse by abusive reply guys. They harass just enough to fly under admin action. Or those abusive replies don't get seen because of private replies.Other times you just want to say your piece without having to entertain everyone who demands a reply or making a followers only post. Besides, it's not like people on the Fediverse don't have other ways to call out disinformation.

I'm really interested because I am very "Fedi positive" and every time I see someone post straight bullshit about Fedi, I can't help but reply to correct their bullshit.Like the whole "opt-in only" debacle regarding BridgyFed back in January. Fediverse is not "opt-in" to the core of the protocol.Obviously that's not as bad as other more critical misinformation that could be spread, but I'm curious as to what could be done.🤔

Screenshot their post to do the same, etc. You don't always have to directly reply to a person to call them out if they're spreading misinformation. Now that is more so warning others about that person.If you want to correct that person directly, provided they're not acting in total bad faith, you should still be able to @ or message them.Just tossing out some suggestions.

@damagecontrolblog @BeAware quotes are widely considered a vector of abuse and thus not yet available on mastodon. limiting replies is similarly misguided imo. focus on getting better re abuse instead of tech solutions when possible.people have diff visions for the fedi, but I want it to be part of everything we do on the web. I want every item to be able to go viral via boosts. an "attention democracy" vision. but then I'd also want the (ranked) criticism to go viral with the "misinfo".

People on Mastodon can just link to a post's URL and reply above it effectively making it a quote post.Completely quashing abuse is difficult when everything is so decentralized for better or worse.But sometimes people just want to say their piece without having to entertain a bunch of replies or bad faith actors. Gonna have to agree to disagree on wanting everything to go viral.

@damagecontrolblog @wjmaggos Quote posts are coming, but also are "limiting quote posts"...Threads already has this and I'm almost certain they won't federate fully without the feature in place.🤷♂️Given that they use Misskeys quote post code, I guess we can assume that "linking" goes out the window with that as well, because when you link a post on Misskey, It turns into a quote post AFAIK.Just for clarification, I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything. I'm genuinely wanting a conversation because I am very passionate about it.

@BeAware @wjmaggos Feels like people have been asking for quote posts for a while. Asking for limits seems newer. But one (and maybe it's just us) can hope that Threads doesn't federate. Didn't they block a bunch of instances on Mastodon including .social?On Misskey, do quote posts will work if someone makes a followers only post? Or is that just for public and unlisted posts?And understandable! We just wanted to also get our own thoughts out there for a feature we wouldn't use ourselves. 😅

@damagecontrolblog @wjmaggos They had them blocked for about 30 minutes but I think it was a "silence" move cause no follow relationships were broken. (I have a .social account) they have since removed them from the blocklist.Also, I don't really know how Misskey handles quote posts and followers only, i was only using it for a short time, but am thinking about going back to it.Yeah, I won't be using "limit replies", I just also hope that there isn't a buch of misinformation that comes along with it.😅All in all, we can only wait and see. They aren't going to change their minds on it, so it is coming at some point.🤷♂️

Comes out a bit weird looking if you follow from Mastodon though.Same. Best we can do is push back on it, the best we can. No matter what the tool looks like, unscrupulous people will try to see what they can get away with.We'll see when it comes out. We're still waiting on quote toots.
