I feel like I'm going crazy can anyone tell me if this is a real creature? I suspect this is an AI generated image as it's breaking my brain. The curvature of the body segments suggest the head is on the right, but the shield like segment seems like it could be a head. There are 8 legs/ antennae on the upper side, but 10 on the lower side but ... isopods have 14 legs and two antennae. WHAT IS THIS feel like I'm having a stroke looking at this.

@futurebird Reverse image search took me to this page. Some sort of crustacean from Finland. https://laji.fi/en/taxon/MX.214448

@futurebird Shield-shaped head is correct. Don't count legs on a living, free-roaming tiny munchkin like this ... they lose legs all the time. I count 7 legs on the lower side and 6 on the upper, with 1 missing in the middle. It appears to have 2 long feelers and 2 short at the rear, with similar at the front but much finer.

@futurebird Also it seems to me there are different magnifications mixed up in the back & foreground

@welshpixie Thank you so much. I couldn't find anything on it and didn't even know if it was real or underwater or anything. Isopods are so amazing and strange... I have so much more to learn about them!

@futurebird Looks like a real photo to me. A casual image search suggests it might be a water-louse.Funny thing AI generated photos often make me feel slighly nauseous, and I'm not sure why. This image looks and feels authentic.

@BrettCoulstock I was getting that unsettling feeling because I couldn't place the creature in any group... the back end is very much like the front end of a crab... which makes no sense... but it's a real creature!https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asellus_aquaticus

@futurebird Often, Googles reverse image search helps. It finds as source the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (FinBIF): https://laji.fi/en/taxon/MX.53367 (first photo) with an Asellus aquaticus Anders Albrecht. Seems that it lost some legs.Where did you find the photo?

@NatureMC It was here on tumblr just presented as a generic isopod. I think because it's a water creature it sent me into a spiral. I thought this was on land. (but now I see the seaweed and other clues and feel kind of silly)https://www.tumblr.com/futurebird/754801399814062080/asellus-aquaticus-wikipedia

@futurebird Sea isopods are a trip.Check out this chart of not credible shapes, found in nature:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Representative_marine_isopod_forms.png

@futurebird You don't have to feel silly! Tumblr is not the most renowned place for real photos and we can't pay enough attention against fakes. They are often so well made that even experts need special software to recognise them.It shows how fascinating and weird living beings can be.

@futurebird Looks like a water louse, common in ponds around here, though I've never examined them in such close detail before. Once you start looking closely at some of the insect life in ponds, you realise how otherworldly a lot of it looks

@futurebird I was gonna say before seeing your update— if I try to "re-see" this in another context, I feel like this would look pretty normal if I saw it in an ocean photo. It's just seeing it on land that makes it look surreal……of course, my biology is weak, so I'm not mentally counting legs! Once you pointed it out I wondered if some of the legs got ate off, but looking closer now I think there might be additional legs that are just occluded by the body because of how it's walking.

@Mazzo @th @justafrog @futurebird as a lurker, I’m immensely enjoying this thread, both for the info and images, but more so just for the existence of the thread itself. It’s a huge relief to see folks just excited and enjoying the world Thank you all!

@justafrog @futurebird a) looks like an an ancient crab ancestor got stuck halfway through a moult, decided to just go with it, and then kept repeating the same mistake.
