What should I do regarding my mobile while in NZ for three weeks? Just buy a prepaid SIM at the airport like I would anywhere else or is there an easy way to keep my number whilst away?

@geordie on an iPhone you can turn on wifi calling while the 4/5G is turned off (airplane mode). Put an NZ sim in an old phone and use it as a hotspot.

@bigjsl I thought you had to have a 4/5G signal to use wifi calling. Like it doesn't do the call through the cellular but you had to have an active connection.

@geordie I tried it before suggesting it. The phone warns you about some stuff when you turn it on.

@drew bleurgh. That's going to suck. I thought "nothing asks me for SMS 2fa" then I thought "it will if it notices I"m in NZ unexpectedly"

@NewtonMark in malaysia I paid $13 for a month of unlimited calls, sms and 40GB of data on a network that was twice as fast as the hotel wifi but NZ may be different. $5 a day for Telstra for calls, text and 1GB. Not terrible.

@geordieThere's travel eSIM cards that'll give you data in a gaggle of countries with long credit expiries if you do this often enough. If your phone can handle a SIM and eSIM at once you can keep getting messages mostly.OzBargain for the latest good deal one. They often give away a gigabyte to get you using them.@NewtonMark

@geordie @NewtonMark is your phone multi esim capable? I can shoot you a code for a nomad esim. Used it in Ireland and England in January. Was a doddle and much cheaper than a local sim or the $5 a day rort the telcos here are on

@geordie depends on the length of the trip, I usually use an eSIM, although a lot are data only (which is usually not an issue in practise)

@geordie I just paid for international roaming option. Wasn't a lot of money for the week or so I was in NZ.Not like the good old days when you'd need a second mortgage to use carrier roaming.

@geordie @franksting @NewtonMark When I was in Switzerland last month I used an Airolo eSIM for data only, which kept my phone number active for calls and texts. Mind you if I answered any calls or texts that would've kicked in Telstra's daily roaming charge. But it was handy for receiving verification codes by text if I bought anything on credit card.

@geordie if your phone supports a second line via an eSIM, we’ve used Airalo a bit - keep your primary number in case you need it, use the eSIM as a second line for calls / data.

@geordie there are lots of internet esim providers. You can usually load 1 physical sim and 1 esim into the phone at the same time and use them both. You get two signal bars. They're particularly useful to set the esim as the default for data but leave your normal SIM for SMS and calls.
