Seeing a lot of "bad politics are due to covid brain damage" discourse today, including from those would want to believe ought know better.Please stop.The seeds for the orchard that is our current moment were planted well before even the SARS outbreak of 2002. Like decades, if not centuries, before.When our politics is fascists saying we have to support fascism to defeat the other fascists, please don't try to make sense of health supremacism by resorting to ableism.It's not a good look.

Find myself musing about California countertop workers dying of silicosis. Of folk in industrial settings refusing PPE once commonly used. Of het-passing couples in stores: a woman in an N95, a man maskless.Narrative of pandemic apologism has been: what does not kill you (acute covid) makes you stronger (fable of "hybrid immunity"). Carries over into other domains where consequences of lax protections are cumulative & long-term, esp. among groups that ground identity in notions of "strength".

In #RentierSociety, wherein long-term, cumulative consequences are routinely elided to preserve #perquisitive #classposture promises of redemption through choice, one needn't cite to brain damage to understand how we got here.For those determined to live in 2019, the protections against acute death tolls in 2020 violated the social contract, the #FrosteanBargain, that those who made good choices got all the choices. The choices were taken away.And folk felt vulnerable in face of uncertainty.

Central promise of #FrosteanBargain is that our choices make us. If you enjoy #RentBounty harvest perks of colonialism—from world offering itself up to be consumed—is because you made good choices. If you are unable to take everything you want, you've made bad choices.Suddenly, all those good choices were for naught. Contract suspended, on threat of imminent death. Everything believed about one's place in the world is null & void. Anyone could die, like that, virtue of choices notwithstanding.

Weakness. Nothing anyone could do but cower and hide from existential threat to everything they had been taught—their entire lives. Virus, here, was the catalyst. Monster at the door was bigger than that.But then we're told: Make the choice to get vaccinated, and you'll live. Make the choice to get vaccinated, and you can resume path of redemption under #FrosteanBargain.Then we're told masks are a scarlet letter. We're told only the weak die of this. Only those who were already sick anyway.

One need not suppose brain damage to understand why so many of those who used precaution before getting covid stop doing so after acute infection. One need not invoke a cutesy narrative of mouse-and-cat disease.What does not kill you, only makes you stronger. We were told this. After a year of feeling weak and afraid. Make the right choice—unlike those other people—and you can go back to normal. Only weak people die of this. People who make bad choices.You are strong, and make good choices.
