Even with the propulsion system issues, #NASA has said #Starliner still would be capable of returning the astronauts 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 to Earth if absolutely necessary - that is, if the capsule must serve as an escape pod from the #ISS in an emergency https://www.independent.co.uk/space/boeing-starliner-explained-rescue-latest-b2568671.html

#NASA has maintained that the #astronauts 👨‍🚀👩‍🚀 are not stranded and can return at any time, a stance that has been met with scepticism. Critics argue that NASA's decision to launch despite known issues mirrors the oversight failures that led to the #Columbia disaster 💥. The agency's willingness to overlook significant risks, given #Boeing's recent history of #quality control failures , has sparked outrage. https://www.ibtimes.sg/nasa-endangered-lives-astronauts-knew-about-boeing-starliner-problems-launched-anyway-75067#Starliner #ISS

Engineers will conduct ground tests using a thruster identical to the ones on #Starliner. That will probably take a couple of weeks ⏳. Engineers will not be able to directly examine the troublesome thrusters on the spacecraft now in orbit because they are located on what is known as the service module. That part will be jettisoned during the flight home, burning up 🔥 in the atmosphere. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/28/science/boeing-starliner-nasa-astronauts.html

@spaceflight @nyrath Why does everything with Boeing take weeks? They must have at least a few of those thrusters in some sort of accessible test setup. They should have dragged that into a test stand minutes after they learned about the thruster failure, not now, weeks later. WTF are they doing, writing JIRA tickets?

@tsturm @spaceflight @nyrath I suspect they're terrified of a worst-case outcome, like: Starliner undocks to return with astronauts on board, helium leak gets worse and damages the rocket fuel pressurization system and the result is a RUD that takes out the ISS as collateral damage. They want to minimize risk to the ISS that the leaky Boeing bomb is currently docked to. It's stable now, but undocking/thruster ignition is a risky business. (Remember the SpaceX Dragon test stand explosion?)

@tsturm @spaceflight @nyrath Starliner is currently blocking a scarce resource, i.e. an ISS docking node. Merely giving up and sending the crew home on a Dragon won't resolve that problem.

#Starliner is expected to fly 🚀 atop the #AtlasV. #ULA ceased production of the rocket in 📆 2024. The vehicles have been allocated to customers, including the six needed for the remaining Starliner flights. The Starliner faces an uncertain future after that. #DeltaIV is retired and no more are available, the #Falcon9 is owned by manned launch competitor #SpaceX, and the #Vulcan Centaur has not yet been human-rated, testing #Boeing would have to pay 💰 for 🤔 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_Starliner#Launch_vehicle

@spaceflight And the current Starliner having trouble means that NASA will be hesitant to certify this as a success - and if they don't, Boeing will have to fly another certification flight on one of the remaining Atlas rockets on their own dime.At that point, there will be only five rockets left for paying Starliner flights. Boeing dug a really deep hole for themselves with this.

Concerns about #Boeing’s quality control have only mushroomed. The public narrative—that the #astronauts are stranded 😱 on the #ISS—has not been flattering. #Boeing has taken the brunt of the bad reviews, because public perception of the aerospace company is already suffering from well-publicized issues with its #airplanes ✈️. But #NASA bears significant responsibility too: for its uneven supervision 🙈 of #Starliner’s development leading up to launch and its overly guarded #communications 🙊 to the public since https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2024/07/boeing-nasa-starliner-astronauts-transparency/679223/

#Starliner cannot perform an automated undocking from the #SpaceStation and entry into Earth’s atmosphere. This seems absurd. #Boeing did not respond to a media query about why this capability was removed ❌ for the crew flight test. https://arstechnica.com/space/2024/08/nasa-likely-to-significantly-delay-the-launch-of-crew-9-due-to-starliner-issues

Heat 🌡️ building up inside the thrusters may be causing Teflon seals to bulge, restricting the flow of propellant. The helium leaks may be a result of seals that have become degraded because of exposure to propellant vapor. The revelations prompted plans for some additional testing this weekend. #NASA does have contingency options if #Starliner is not approved 👎 to bring the #astronauts home https://edition.cnn.com/2024/07/25/science/boeing-starliner-issues-root-cause-testing-nasa/index.html

@cstross @tsturm @spaceflight @nyrath While I don't disagree, they have activated and tested some of Starliner's troublesome thrusters since it docked at ISS. If RUD was the concern I don't think they would have done that. I think the concern is more likely that something goes wrong after undocking and it can't do the deorbit burn or botches it resulting in loss of crew. ISS visiting vehicle schedule is tight, how much longer before they send Starliner home empty?

@acsawdey @cstross @tsturm @spaceflight @nyrath there's no reason to send it home empty. The capsule is in perfect health, the main engines used for deorbit are in perfect health. The only trouble was 5 of the 28 RCS thrusters which are mostly back online and not mission critical.I hate Boeing too but I don't understand why everyone thinks it's unsafe when littirally everyone at NASA is saying it's fine and they just want to test the trouble thrusters before they are discarded.
