When there is an incumbent a debate is an opportunity for the country to "get to know" the challenger. When both candidates are former presidents, neither of whom have been out of the news even for a moment... what is the point? Will we learn anything new? I'm seeing a lot of panic and "This is bad for Biden" flickering by, and I'd agree ... if he wasn't someone we already knew. Never-forget the implicit desire media has for a horse race. I'll be curious to see the ratings.

@futurebird I want to see the clock time, which was allowed to speak more. There's no point for a decibel meter, though, because Joe is doing ASMR next to a boombox.

@LinuxAndYarn It could be since Trump talks really really fast. I didn't realize just how fast until I tried typing a transcript of one of his speeches since I couldn't find a copy. Normally I can type fast enough for most speakers. Not him. He talks compulsively, it's a talent I guess, since many people think that saying a lot of words is ... impressive. But when you look at them on paper? Total nonsense, even before you start counting the lies.

@futurebird There's only two ways Biden wins this election. Either he fires up the base to come out and vote, or he convinces the undecided low-information voters to vote for him. This debate was an opportunity to do both. He's miserably failing on both counts.

@futurebird yeah of course. But seeing Biden step on his lines was demoralizing. He's right, but he's just not a reality TV star.I'm still going to get up tomorrow and fight harder.

@futurebird but he seems more with it- sadly- I’m crying at Bidens performance- where is the Biden from state of union- Good this is not good at all. Biden needs to hand the nomination to somebody else at the convention.

@BlueWaver22 I suspect, given the overly reactive nature of Democrats and their tendency to take all of the crying and moaning from Republicans too seriously they wanted Biden to see "Normal and Stable" and Trump to look "unhinged"So, they likely worried about having him come on too aggressive. Which they worry about all the time without reason. And it sounds like it didn't work at all. And media have been thirsty for *something* to "balence" their criticism. Hard given who Trump is.

@futurebird @BlueWaver22 David Sedaris's take on the 2008 election applies here too."I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. 'Can I interest you in the chicken?' she asks. 'Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?' To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked."

@futurebird My hope was that without editing people who previously were avoiding this stuff might see just how incoherently Trump rambles.Probably not though. Most just see what they want to see. Maybe if we frequency shifted the audio and adjusted tone or something a bit so he sounds different and said "this is a tape of someone's skinhead grandpa with Alzheimer's" and played it for people then corrected it after "oops, that was actually Trump" they might start to get it.

@clpkbc @BlueWaver22 It's not a helpful response, but this story always made me think: I don't know if I'd eat anything from one of those little carts, if they contained both. But, that's probably just over-thinking the analogy. Apparently this is more like a force feeding situation.

@nazokiyoubinbou More people are watching this debate to worry over what it means to imaginary "voters" who somehow do not have any opinion. Some are enjoying Trump because they enjoy him and think is funny and "tells it like it is"Let this lull them into surprise for November. I detest Biden. I don't find him compelling. I have never liked him. And I will ensure he will win because it's the only viable option. It's a very different kind of "enthusiasm" --

@nazokiyoubinbou In some ways it's lends me a better sense of political clarity. With Obama I always had to remind myself that I didn't like him. Because he is very charismatic and a great public speaker. So, I had this sort of split mind thing going where I would think "Presidents are not the sort of people one should *like* they are components is a system you can't totally ignore."Biden is easy to see as a component. No danger of being charmed. But he's in the box & I am relentless.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou My summary of this debate: Trump did a fine job of recycling his MAGA speeches - but it won't appeal to anyone else.Biden stood up to the firehose of sewage from Trump. Biden finally got the hook in at the very end with the Whiner business. That broke Trump's jaw.

@tuban_muzuru @futurebird I hope so on that last part. I don't know. Trump seems to be shockingly effective at being a whiny baby and simultaneously somehow getting his base to think he's a strong person.

@tuban_muzuru @futurebird I'm not sure that MAGA do hate the rich. I think they pretend they do but don't really. They're a huge part of the ones who help prop up the various rich con men like Trump, Musk, etc etc.Really they just hate everything and everyone, but still treat the rich better than they should.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou The GOP, which has always kept its finger wet in the wind, understands their core voters, the old Boomer poots, are being tucked into their overpriced coffins. The kids can barely stand Biden, but they fear and despise Trump. The younger GOP rodents are coming out of the woodwork to snipe at Trump. The Lincoln Project is embarrassing many mainline Republicans into silence.

@futurebird @LinuxAndYarn A statistic I ran across recently is that is most groups, people will accept whoever talks the most as the leader. Talking the most is a stronger indicator than even gender.Trump has learned he gets great reactions from groups of stupid people by just flooding the zone so he seems to be in control of it. People are still surprised that it works.

@futurebird @drakenblackknight Agreed, but the right has managed to convince a lot of people even outside their base that somehow Biden's age is worse than Trump's (even though it's only a three year difference and Trump is the one showing far worse mental decline.) I think it is a good response to that particular claim at least I guess.I don't even know where to start with many people. So many have an all or nothing attitude and are so easily convinced by the wrong stuff.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou I was pretty unhappy about the Biden nomination in '20 and had very low expectations. He's widely surpassed those expectations, mostly because of the actually meaningful climate legislation he got through and the pro-union stuff. That's been good. The bad stuff that came with it has been bad but I expected most of it.Since Obama I've tried to permanently lower my expectations of a President. The best ones are extremely rare and still horribly flawed.

@MisuseCase @rob No, I was yelling about replacing him for three years and about six months ago I realized it was not going to happen (I wrote letters, made calls… but I’m just a NYC school teacher who cares right?) so I have decided to accept this is what we need to do. I will do it. (can’t pretend to be a fan, however)
