So I've been listening to a number of musical comedy acts lately, and it's maybe just my personal taste, but I feel like Flight of the Conchords isn't just a head of everyone else, but nobody comes close. Like, Lonely Island is funny but usually it's just a goofy/gross concept and then the lyrics just emphasize without building much, e.g. "Dick in a Box." (1/n)

Tenacious D is sometimes very good but it always feels to me very particular to its time and place, and although Black's personality often carries stuff, having gibberish improv sentences so often makes the songs less re-listenable. They're funny, but seldom clever, relying on Black as a zany character.

Conchords for me is the only total package - the music is good, the lyrics and concepts clever, the wordplay often just sparkling. Most impressively, sometimes you can have a song that's a complete parody of a common relationship situation that's so well done it actually captures some of the serious qualities, e.g "I'm Not Crying."

They also have what is, for my money, the greatest line in the history of musical comedy:"They're turning kids into slaves just to make cheaper sneakers,But what's the real cost, cause the sneakers don't seem that much cheaper."

@ZachWeinersmith My main experience with the Conchords is seeing them open for someone else at an arena show and the sound was so bad that we couldn't make out any of the words so we just sat there shrugging at each other while everyone else who had heard the songs before cracked up

@ZachWeinersmith this relates to what I call 'thumb on the scab humor': willingness to get to a really vulnerable & uncomfortable place with the joke. Taika Waititi's best stuff shares that quality, which probably helps to explain why he & Jemaine have worked together so much.

@ZachWeinersmith They also do a really great job of creating a parody of the sound and style of different groups, like in the song about Jemaine becoming a prostitute having a very The Police vibe 🤣 Or the "Inner City Pressure" Pet Shop Boys sound. Such a great group!

@ZachWeinersmith I need to listen to more Conchords. One of my favorite comedic songs is "Three Minutes of Ecstasy" by Ninja Sex Party (yes, Game Grumps Dan's band). @ZachWeinersmith Does They Might Be Giants count? Arguably not, but they certainly have some songs that are highly comic. Phish too for that matter...but I guess I consider them both bands who are sometimes funny, not comedy music. The Handsome Boy Modelling School record also feels like a comedy record to me, and I happen to think it's great (though I admit my hip hop chops are weak, like clock radio speakers).

@ZachWeinersmith in britain we have Half Man Half Biscuit, who rely less on parody and more on wry cultural observations, particuarly of day-time TV and life on the dole. They have a knack of writing songs that are still good - anthemic even - after the initial laughter has faded... might be a bit too culturally specific to the uk though...
