RE: My latest blog postI really would like outside opinions on what others think. I have many conflicted feelings about Threads vs. MastodonMy love for the fediverse, open software, linux, and building a free future, while also being a content creator who has struggled to really build ... any kind of an audience here, while it's been so confusingly simple to do on Threads, even though that could collapse as soon as tomorrow lolI'm currently not blocking Threads, but using both simultaneously, and I want to know what people who interact with me on here think for real. Or better yet, how anyone on here has built an audience of thousands of people

@cmdr_nova I think a lot of it is just vibing with the culture of where you are. I've always struggled to get any kind of engagement on Insta, Twitter, and the rest.I feel that in the Fedi, there's a big tonal shift from the others insofar as people here aren't so much an 'audience' so much as a clusterfuck of weirdos from around the globe (myself included).It's more work because it's more human here, less algorithmic; more conversational than broadcasting.

@ChrisWere Yeah, maybe I just need to turn off the "creator" part of my brain and just use Mastodon on a consistent basis instead of having these week long brainstorming sessions where I try and figure out how to use my time online lol

@cmdr_nova The good thing about the Fedi is that it doesn't punish you if you don't post something interesting, or something people don't engage with. You can just be yourself.Personally I find it really liberating. @ChrisWere @cmdr_nova I was about to write exactly something like that: I mainly in the Italian-speaking fediverse, so like any regional reality the discussion is quite particular, but in general I find that is very helpful to have instances with strong background themes (even if then we often have generic discussions in the timelines since classic social media have accustomed us a bit like that in recent decades) 1/2⬇️

@ChrisWere @cmdr_nova Threads disgusts me for various reasons (but I still use IG and Whatsapp so don't take it as an integralist speech!) and I'm glad my fedi instance blocked it, but probably because I see the fediverse as an heir to the old forums / internet communities of the early 2000s. In fact, that's why I think it's not a place to look for "audience", but conversation on topics, very different approach to what Meta, Twitter ecc. led us to get used to2/2

@xabacadabra @cmdr_nova I used to be pro-Threads-federation, but now I'm against it; mostly on the basis that I think the two cultures don't gel together well.I'm pretty confident the Fedi will outlive Threads.Normal folks are withdrawing from social media, weirdos are thriving in the Fedi.

@ChrisWere @cmdr_novaOn threads: yep, and I would say that, given Meta's philosophy, it was somewhat of an inevitable path (thankfully, Threads doesn't seem to have taken off particularly, so I also think the fedi will outlive it)On social media withdrawal: hmm, hard to say. My perception is that there is much less active participation and more lurking, a desire to be spectators on TikTok or IG more or less like it used to be on TV or early YT, but there are obviously many variables involved

@katharsisdrill I can only speak for my timeline, but it's stuffed full with a host of certifiable nutters, in the best way possible. I love how weird the Fedi is.
