Thinking about judges wigs and other trappings of power. Apparently in Poland when they have legal court everyone wears robes: different colors for attorneys and the judge etc. Of course in the UK judges still wear wigs which US judges are free to wear too, but simply don't.On the US Supreme court it's just black robes-- Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Stephen Breyer have all tried to make skull caps happen but no one else cared.

Never forget that Clarence Thomas tried to make silly little hats happen on the court and failed. I think an attraction to little hats that make you important is not a good character trait.

To be honest it's something I see in myself and I work hard to keep any attraction to little hats of power in check. I would be delighted to wear a wizard's cap all of the time for some pointless but official reason. And knowing this about myself I reflect and repent.

@futurebird Don't repent. Wearing hats to try to make yourself look important is stupid, but wearing hats because hats are fun is is the right way to go. Get yourself a good wizard's cap. You don't need it to look powerful. You need it to look cool. There's a difference.

They are actually passed on to new judges with some retailoring. The supreme court can kick out judges for dishonorable conduct or when they are gulty of such a gross dereliction of duty that their stay in office is untenable.#Germany #law #SupremeCourt

@justafrog @futurebird Clothing was important back in the day to make lines of authority clear in an era before photographs were cheap and plentiful. Now that most people would recognize royalty, Elon Musk or Biden due to mass media, there is no need for over the top clothing designed to intimidate. You get the deference without needing the hoops or top hat. That is why everyone found it funny when Justin Timberlake didn't get let off of a DUI. He wasn't recognized so got no deference. Judges have retained ceremonial clothing because most are an unknown bureaucrat that deals with the public directly. That authority needs to be immediately clear. That these guys want to add additional pomp to their clothing speaks volumes about how they view themselves. The robe alone are not enough to make the peasants cower. Their clothing need to mark their authority over other judges as well. They want crowns.

@sewblue @justafrog I thought it was funny that the cop did recognize him, but it never occurred to me that he wouldn't get a ticket. I'm kind of shook that so many people think that this would be OK at all?But then I don't drive so I don't know much about police stops first hand. Do they let people off? I've never seen that as a passenger.

@sewblue @justafrog I have been "pulled over" by NYPD on four occasions on my bike. Once for running a red light, Once for making a right turn on red and I got a ticket for both. I showed up at court and since the cop didn't show I didn't have to pay for either. The other two stops were for no reason the cop didn't explain and I was scared to ask. But after not giving a reason they said something vague about "riding safe" (I was not going fast or breaking any rules) and let me go?

@futurebird @sewblue @justafrog cops do sometimes let people off. This is part of the problem. Because they retain discretion, which on the surface makes sense, they choose who to let off with "a warning," who to give a ticket it to and for ANY reason who they arrest. The problem with discretion is, of course, that it let's their own personal biases as well as the department's culture of biases to apply the law unequally. And we all know who loses when that happens.

@futurebird @justafrog I think it depends. I've not read enough on the incident (other than hearing the jokes) but cops do have a huge amount of discretion in charging someone. A cop flustered by fame might not be as rigorous in enforcement. I've had cops pass me through DUI check points when I said I had a drink on the ferry. Young, pretty white chick in business clothes, 7 pm in the evening, while they weren't treating people of color with nearly as much courtesy, demanding papers and what not. Seizing cars for any reason they could. Came out later that they were abusing the DUI process to collect fees. Show me your papers! Kind of thing. I stopped trusting cops and DUI enforcement after that experience. I was by no means drunk, but I should have been tested if they gave a shit.

@futurebird @sewblue @justafrog yes, a lot: "don't do that again" or "this is just a warning". I've gotten "I will remember your car and be here later this week watching for you and if you don't have your car registered, next time you get the ticket" and even a driving while impaired (lack of sleep) where the cop said you are going to park right here and sleep for four hours and if your car isn't here when I come back in an hour I'm sending out an alert and they'll haul you in.

@richpuchalsky @sewblue @justafrog Once of the cops who ticked me said "there's a quota, just show up for the court date and you won't have to pay" He was correct about that. Granted I probably shouldn't run red lights, but I'm on a tiny bicycle and it's very hard to take anything seriously when the bike lanes are full of parked cars and drivers honk at you for no reason.

@richpuchalsky @sewblue @justafrog Also I was a bike messenger back in the day. I'm a much more conservative rider now. And all of the times I've been pulled over have been post-messenger days. When I was really a minor street terror I never once got pulled over. The police can't really manage to signal and pull over anyone who is riding like a manic. So they pull over school teachers going 15 mph. It's pretty pointless.

@futurebird I've always been fascinated by the traditional hats people in various jobs around the world have worn/ still wear. Every job used to have it's own hat, apparently. This did away with the need for name tags. CEO's clearly need a special hat. For the USA Supreme court, the hats should be reflective of who their biggest financial donor is, like in Racing Cars.

@futurebird @sewblue @justafrog when I get pulled over (very rarely, as I live in a city that literally does not enforce traffic laws), the result is usually either a warning or a minor bureaucratic hassle with no direct monetary consequences (forgot to put the tags on, old insurance card in the car, etc). I've been pulled over for 15 over the limit on the freeway in a state I didn't live in, didn't have a current insurance card, and just got a warning.I'm a cishet white male, though.

@unixorn @futurebird @smellsofbikes @justafrog The car they drive is an indicator a asshole level too.An expensive car is the same as an upper class garment then. Driving is fairly anonymous so the need to have a high status vehicle remains. Giant pickup trucks are doing the same function as big hoop skirts did then. Take up space unnecessarily, make everyone around give way.Hard to sit gracefully in a hoop skirt. Hard to park an oversized pick up truck. Enter a crowded room and people need to make way, enter a 4 way stop and bully your way through first. I call big, ego driven trucks pretty pretty princess trucks because they are no different than a woman in a massive hoop skirt. Exactly the same impulse - wealth and a need for deference - is being communicated. For both skirt and truck, the size indicates driver/wearer is a delicate flower and needs to be treated as such!

@futurebird It's even worse than that. Cops in lots of places can give their friends and family cards and bumper stickers that will get you out of most tickets when presented. There's a resale market for them too. It's one of the most openly corrupt things I know of off the top of my head, but most people just seem fine with it.Where I live they get bumper stickers. Nothing as obvious as a thin blue line flag, but after someone told me I see them everywhere. https://www.vice.com/en/article/v7gxa4/pba-card-police-courtesy-cards
