@jwz Let me get this straight: Mozilla, which is perpetually short of money and facing dire funding shortfalls, bought an advertising company that was so wildly successful that it could be purchased by a non-profit that was perpetually short of money and facing dire funding shortfalls? Sure reads like a successful company to me! I'm sure this will work out great, and isn't just a deal brokered by a VC to get an underperforming investment off his balance sheet before it cratered.

@jwz Mozilla has been financed by ads since 20 years. This pays the people working on the browser. 99% of the work is actually done by employees, not by volunteers. Acquiring that advertising company is the next logical step to get rid of Google (also financed by ads..) Instead of blaming shaming, we need to think about how to finance working on free software, as relying on unpaid work is not viable and brings issues with diversity. #mozilla #foss #fossecosystem

@traecer @jwz my message is based on what a person working at Mozilla told me; while the original message, which was retooted a lot, is blurry and spreading FUD and anxiety, which is why I reacted to it, wanting to take the discussion further, where it belongs: let's talk about viable financing schemes for FOSS. If we don't want stuff to be financed by ads or companies scraping our data, then what can we do? That's the question.

Today, they have taken this subtext and turned it into the *actual text*. That's news. Literal news. "Instead of blaming and shaming" -- fuck that.
