The term “Open Social” is finally started to stick a bit. I still don’t get the logic of calling AP networks, “the fediverse.” It clarifies nothing, and confuses routinely. It’s time to let it go. An “AP-based Open Social network” seems sufficient, and doesn’t beg the question, “if you’re on the “fediverse,” where is everyone else?”

@shoq Open social sounds a little too much like corporate sanitised marketing speak to me. Sometimes that's necessary in the F/OSS world, but it's not my jam.I call it the Fedi or Mastodon amongst IRL friends. The Fedi's organic, messy, chaotic, human - and that's what I like about it. Most corporate social media is dying, I want to be a little like it as possible.

@ChrisWere @shoq yeah the Fediverse is a *name*. It's a specific place. Open Social just sounds like an idea

@ChrisWere Mileages vary. I don’t know what makes anything “open” sound sanitized or “marketing speak?” Open seems to be the opposite of closed (and proprietary). has a relatively similar meaning in almost any context or usage, and suggests lack of restriction or ownership. Fediverse means absolutely nothing to anyone not already given some vague definition to start from, and many can’t even agree on what that is. It’s definitely not “Mastodon,” and vice versa.

@shoq The term 'open source' was introduced to make free software more attractive to corporations. There are many proprietary products and services that wrongly use the term 'open' (eg OpenAI).
