"EDC" (Every Day Carry) has become a catch all term for men's accessories, jewelry, cool knives, ninja stars and ... fidget spinners? It's a very strange market niche, and a premium item are fancy decorative beads. Here are some of the currently popular motifs. Part of me thinks this has something to do with not getting rid of all the hang up around men wearing jewelry. Everyone like pretty beads. So you have to have "men's beads"I don't know what to make of zombie Trump. I guess it's a bit of ambivalence? Hopefully? There used to be just plain Trump beads but you don't see those anymore. It's all this half monster face look.

I guess, like "Scarface" this is stuff that young men might like, because their dad liked those things, and it has a certain tough maturity in their mind. I would like a Sigourney Weaver bead, but you never see stuff like this in the "decorate your knife" niche.

@futurebird I'm discomfited by the creeping militarism of the EDC crowd, it's got sort of the same flavor as soap with tactical grips. Like I'm looking at an externalized inner struggles of people whose strictly enforced gender roles demand this joyless performance they can't bring themselves to escape.

@futurebird It's been weird for a while, one of those obsessive crowds that keeps mutating and climbing up their own butts. Like the custom keyboard crowd that has for quite a while been making elaborate custom keys that aren't actually usable as keys and come in display cases.

I think some stuff like the obsession towards silent builds arises in part because of a kneejerk reaction to how other people react -- which in turn is unfairly biased primarily because the most famous line is admittedly quite obnoxious. I used to have Kailh Pinks which felt really good and had a much more satisfying click sound, but I knew even they wouldn't be tolerated just on principle even though membrane keyboards make a sound too.

@nazokiyoubinbou @erosdiscordia @billyjoebowers I was really happy when I could simply buy a nice mech board and NOT need to build it from scratch since that is a lot of work. There are many great ready made mech boards to choose from now. That was not true 10 years ago, and so if you cared about that kind of thing you had to learn to build.

@futurebird @erosdiscordia @billyjoebowers Yeah, when I built mine I had to put it together (there is no ready-made version of what I wanted) but it came with a pre-soldered PCB so I didn't have to solder anything (unless I wanted LEDs under the keys, but I don't) and a case that had to be screwed together. I had to get the switches and caps separately and put it all together. Took a while, but really wasn't hard. Many people have to get custom PCBs from printers and solder everything!

@futurebird @GGMcBG There is an EDC subreddit if that means anything. The idea has kind of morphed and there is more bling. My EDC is: phone, keys, watch (sometimes pocket sometimes wrist), wallet, pocket knife of the day, pepper spray. If I’m walking the dog also a flashlight. Less like jewelry, but I’m older.

@futurebird Wish we could just let people wear whatever.It really doesn't impact my life if some guy is wearing more gold than Mr T and Thelonius Monk combined.Same for lacy frills or any haircut or hair dye.This idea that things people wear need a gender check really has to go.
