       I'm on Amtrak. I went to the cafe, bought hot tea and water. The point of sale device is awful, but straightforward enough. Insert card, keystrokes, thenMessage message DO NOT REMOVE CARDOK cool. I don't. A few seconds later it says Message message DO NOTREMOVE CARD. Brain sees "remove card" so I do. Ooopsie my misteak. Entire cafe system crashes. I pay cash. Cafe closed. 30, 45 min later it's open again. I go back to buy a muffin, and ask, umm, did my transaction really crash the system?Cashier says yes. I said I'm so sorry I did that. But this must happen occasionally? Yes, and each time the system crashes and all terminals etc must be restarted and cafe is closed each time.Blame politicians for starving public transportation.

       @tomjennings It's #Amtrak in particular.  The cons liked the idea of relieving the common carriers of their passenger obligations when Amtrak was created in '71 but they hate that it's “not profitable” and both squeeze its subsidy as much as they can get away with *and* micromanage it. And have done so for so long that it's pretty close to unfixable now.  Sad!

       Multiple choice:1)bad stupid inept programmers. 2)ordinary programmers in a shit corporation. Why slag fellow programmers?When you or I not fix problems like that? When we are overworked or underpaid or likely both. Given what we know of Amtrak chances are they're forced to select cheapest possible product. And a procurement process that's probs lt captive and shitty. There's no reason to believe the coders here are any less good than the rest of us. Come on have a little empathy.
