It doesn't matter what "chruch" or "religion" one is part of, law is law and this goes for everyone no matter what you believe or don'tIt's freaking absurd crimes are "handeled internally by the church", it doesn't work like that  For me as an atheist, it's sometimes hard to see certain churches not as a criminal org themselvesLike cartel members sitting in front of a in-house cartel judge, yeah that goes well..State and church should be separate, period

@stuxI stopped saying the "Under God" part of the Pledge of Allegiance in high school. It felt odd how many people were willing to just go along with it just to not make waves even though it was clearly a violation of church and state to require it. Back then the debate was over displaying statues of the 10 Commandments on school property. I'm wondering how the supreme court is going to handle this new requirement to display them in classrooms.

@stux That was written into the US Constitution but some people seem determined to make the US a Christian theocracy. As for the church covering up crimes, I have a personal example: https://www.adamhorowitzlaw.com/blog/2021/07/fr-david-primeaux-diocese-of-lafayette/ (TW on link: sexual abuse, suicide). In between when he resigned and he died, he became a computer science professor and I had 3 classes with him. We didn't know about his past until after I had already graduated as it was exposed after his death

@stux And if you pull back their red velvet curtains . . .it's all about power and money. And getting away with child abuse.

@stux The BOR (Romanian Orthodox Church) is basically its own state, in a state (Romania). They have their own internal divisions for anticorruption, their own judges, councils, etc. This is how people get away with crime, it's all just 'handed internally', the person receives a 'punishment' that doesn't even come close to the legal prosecution's punishment, and then the person goes back to work after some time. BOR is LITERALLY a mafia. They have their own construction companies that have contracts with the State, they're all corrupt, greedy and 'unChristian', if they were to be compared to their shitty Bible, if they even read it.

@stux Also in present Germany: to my knowledge all cases of child abuse were handled internally by the churches (catholic as well as protestant ). How is this even possible?? No state attorney took the cases.I really don’t get it

@stux Cartel members face more punishment from their own for fuckin up than a priest does from his peers no matter how many children he's assaulted.

@stux Aye. This kind of thing just feeds into an ecosystem of "carved-out exceptions" rather than "baseline reasonable expectations upon which we all build", doesn't it?

@stuxDitto. Ironically the last two months I've been in a church twice for family events, but short of that I'd never go.

@stux what made our country distinct was that our founding fathers made sure we would have a secular government and the rule of law would prevail. Darwin showed us that belief in gods was irrelevant, certainly no place in the 21st century. However, one can believe whatever religious belief they choose, but our government cannot enforce it.

@stux I agree, however the law doesn't equal morality and neither does religion determine morality.

@stux @dgar and thanks to many recent SCOTUS decisions over the past few years, the scope of religious exemptions are getting wider and not for the better

@stux You break God's law, you answer to God and deal with the consequences. You break mankind's law, you answer to mankind and deal with the consequences. If you're not in a theocracy there's no reason to conflate the two.

@stux @kevinrns It is stupid to give groups of people who have superstitions special treatment on taxes and criminal law. They should not be persecuted, but rather treated like UFO, MAGA or cryptid groups.

@stux The great power of the church is also that, however there are international agreements, and the Vatican is a small state with enormous power that exit before other modern state almost since 1270 (754 years).

@stux Also an atheist but I am troubled by what law one is morally bound by, and I am speaking of TRUE believers, body and soul. Let's skip the abortion issue but consider sexual abuse of a child. Let's say that you have proof that a Priest is abusing several children and have notified authorities and church officials and nothing is being done.Do you have a moral obligation, despite man AND God's law, to intervene?
