Be it resolved that there is no programming environment more completely batshit than the BASIC cartridge -- and controllers -- for the Atari 2600Years ago, @codinghorror wrote a very funny blog post about it, including photos of the input controllers: https://blog.codinghorror.com/everything-i-needed-to-know-about-programming-i-learned-from-basic/And he scanned in the manual: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25885309@N02/albums/72157604661612578/

@clive @codinghorror That's insane, and I learned to program on "TRS-80 Level 1 BASIC," the tiny basic that shipped with the original 4K TRS-80 Model I. (I escaped that and upgraded to "TRS-80 Level 2 BASIC," which was a localized version of Microsoft BASIC, as soon as I could afford the ROM and needed additional memory.

@clive @codinghorror I remember thinking back then, “No thanks. I’ll wait for a real computer.”

@clive @codinghorror I found this cart as a kid going through the things my parents had purchased for the 2600 and was immediately frustrated and confused. I later ended up teaching myself programming using the Applesoft BASIC Reference Manual. I assume because I didn't know about or was not able to find the Programming Manual. I think I still have the 2600 cart somewhere.

@clive @codinghorrorOooh, it uses the left arrow for assignment. None of the usual assignment vs equality bugd. Nice.

@zurmikopa @codinghorror Right on! There probably aren’t a lot of those carts left over in the wild anymore
