@jannAlso, Freedom *OF* religion is also the protection *OF* religion. Sorry. It's actually not freedom from religion at all. That's just how it's been corrupted. It's separation of church and State not suppression of church by State.

@chris I really believe it also means freedom FROM religion...ie: your religious views may not be forced on anyone else. They don't have to be of faith to be protected from being forced to be inundated by anyone's religion/totems.

@chris I understand. My only point is the following: This GOP law states that every single taxpayer-funded elementary, middle, high school, and college must display them in every classroom. That's not a person "expressing their own faith in front of me". That's a government indoctrinating my kids (if I had any) and nieces and nephews!

The first amendment actually prohibited the federal government from interfering with states establishing their own official state religions.Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...It wasn't until the 14th amendment that "freedom of religion" as a personal right was incorporated as a prohibition against the states. 14A incorporation doctrine hasn't been fleshed out much by SCOTUS, so it's at least interesting to see how they're going to argue the inevitable challenges. It's actually pretty similar to blue states that keep passing gun laws after Bruin.
