@lednaBM It's what I call the "lion slayer" delusion. Many men are convinced they could slay a lion given a sword. This is also known as the "gladiator delusion".

@mintyfresh @lednaBM It's the same fallacy that drives most gun sales. The idea that an unpracticed and largely untrained shooter can use a gun to defend their home or overthrow a trained army. Sheer folly.

It's not sheer folly. It is folly, but not so much sheer. Civilians who own firearms represent a very real threat to any military tyranny. They can't overthrow a trained army, especially in the USA where combat training for civilians is literally illegal, but they can and will inflict casulties on their attackers. Fascist armies are notoriously craven, because they hold all their members in constant fear. all that loud crowing of their great loyalty covers up a culture of extreme suspicion, where anyone admitting suspicion becomes the enemy. So a little can go a long way.The police state can overwhelm any resistance through sheer maddened fanaticism, but guerilla warfare can still be effective against them. As autocrats, they lose support quickly, and their own core grows increasingly unstable as people start to realize there's a way out. They will always engage in campaigns to disarm their victims, before beginning to systematically annihilate them. Any lie is acceptable to them, to reduce the slaughter of their side, in slaughtering the others.So yeah, the existence of black people owning firearms makes the police less likely to shoot them. I'm pretty sure the gods don't exist, but anti-theists seem compelled to reinvent them as straw men for a good knock-down, drag-out argument to prove to themselves that the gods don't exist.
