Not a huge believer in generational differences per se, but have you noticed that up through at least the 80s it's perfectly okay to have a story or biography start with "he abandoned his family to go on a journey" and have the abandoner be the protagonist?

@ZachWeinersmith See also: Close Encounters of the Third Kind where the protagonist goes "my family doesn't understand my obsession with aliens, so I'm gonna go live with aliens."

@ZachWeinersmith I feel like a number of those stories have an ending with a very different viewpointKid: Mom, I have terrible news about dad.Mom: Did he die?Kid: Much worse. He's returned.M: Shit.K: What will we do?M: You run out and tell him how much we've missed him. I'll phone the bank and have Mr. Brown make it look like we're impoverished. Oh, and dear?K: YesM: Mr. Stevens is the *gardener*, not mommy's special friend.K: Of course, mother.

@ZachWeinersmith Yes, it was like a statement on how important whatever he abandoned his family for was.

@ZachWeinersmith Sudden generational differences exist through widespread experienced trauma, like mass war conscription or food scarcity. Those are rare in the US.But societal moral norms constantly change, which is generally good unless it slides back to being more illiberal.

@ZachWeinersmith This made me curious, it looks like ~12% of the US population served in WWII. So there were generations where everyone knew someone who had been on an unusual journey, and came back different, or didn't come back.
