People are just the worst. Also though, people are absolutely the best, and I love those ppl.I'm starting to see the wisdom of the walled garden. I mean, it doesn't matter if what endangers you comes from a corporate source or a malicious techbro source β the harm is not only the same but more apt to be wielded by the tech bros and their apologists. And they know you can't and won't stop them. From a safety and privacy perspective, who is Open Source federation for?#Mastodon #Fediverse

@fembot not safety and privacy...It's an open platform. If you came here for privacy, you DEFINITELY came to the wrong place.Maybe one day it will be more private. However, coming to an open platform and expecting it, is quite wild. Some people still think there's not Nazis, pedophiles, rapists, etc on Fediverse...π³It goes a long way to do some research before joining such a project and speaking on things like that.

@BeAware Safety first, though, right. Yesterday's breach was a direct reminder of how techbros design systems for themselves first, which is actually fine. It's when the rest of us participate that the system itself is weaponized in ways that compromise safety. What I wonder is how open source itself might encourage malicious ppl to use open source to harm others. Do you have an opinion on that?Walled gardens have other downsides, for sure. I think you were brave to reply, so thx.

@fembot Not sure how it could be deliberately weaponized. It wasn't deliberately weaponized in this case either, the owner just didn't think it through fully. They plan on full AP integration, it just wasn't ready yet. Now they're rethinking if they wanna join Fedi at all.Things can change in terms of privacy here. I just think it's important to realize how things ARE vs how everyone wants it to be.We currently don't have privacy and it's very important to realize that and protect yourself if you don't want to be public. There's WAY more private places to be like matrix or signal if that's what you're after. This is just social media that works across sites, so it should be handled as such and not as if it were a safe haven.Social Media has never been a safe private place. On any platform. It's always public...π€·ββοΈ

@BeAware I'm not exactly sure either. Yesterday's case seems like just exploiting existing site architecture. Not particularly believeable they didn't know how it works here. That's a great point = how things are here vs. how ppl might want them to be. Seems like safety and privacy (different but related things) are important to some ppl and less so to others. There's no slam in that, it makes sense. It should be possible to accommodate all, imo. Opt-in (or out) anti-AI instances, for example.

@fembot everything here IS opt-out, you opt-out by blocking via AP. They, however, didn't use AP. Therefore, technically nobody could opt-out. Hopefully they learned their lesson. There's a HUGE number of people trying to make EVERYTHING opt-in though. That goes against the very nature of the platform and everything I'm against. If someone has to opt-in to seeing my posts, I'm back on Twitter essentially. Nobody will see me because how will they know to look for me? It's weird...I want to be public because when I first got here, I realized VERY quickly how much more interaction I got. If we become completely opt-in, that goes away completely.

@BeAware What they learned and demonstrated to others is how easy it is to scrape the Fediverse for AI, though. They'll be back, is my guess. Am I cynical? Lol, yeah, a little. What would be helpful in this case would be an anti-AI (or anti-scraping?) feature we could opt into or out of while still maintaining interoperability with the Fediverse. Surely someone is able to develop this. A fediverse moonshot! Why not though?I hear your frustration about individual account opt-in. Not ideal.

@fembot Sounds like a good idea. Some way to add specific profiles to robots.txt so that it doesn't effect the whole platform.
