I would read the shit out of a book about where sports came from. Like each sport. Like netball is literally what happened when initial stories of basketball’s emergence were misunderstood (it’s literally that joke about renaissance artists painting animals they’ve never actually seen), and football gets argued about based on the misconception it involves kicking when it’s called that because it’s not on horseback like its original competing sports (of which polo survives.) I imagine if anyone writes this it’ll be @erinrileyau

Why is badminton? It’s a sport with a feathered eraser instead of a ball like there has to be a backstory here.

@geordie I would also love a book like that. Give it to Bill Bryson or someone. When AllPro first opened, we had a big badminton fan, so we now have an emojo of Spanish badminton star Carolina Marin, lol :marin: 🏸

@thomas ohhh God how good would Bill Bryson do it? Australia has Titus O’Reilly who is a sports history nerd who would do it justice too.

@geordie @erinrileyau lawn darts came about at the end of a decades long arms race in indoor darts. In 1940, After hundreds of pointless fatalities, the rules of indoor darts were changed to disallow smashing your opponent's darts out of the board. The dreadnaught darts became obsolete overnight. Prices crashed at the pool, dart, and curling supply stores....

@sexybenfranklin @erinrileyau yeah it’s “on foot” v horseback, not “you predominantly use your feet.” (This is contested. It’s broadly accepted by historians but niche competing theories exist)

@geordie I simply want to know who invented volleyball and why. Which came first, volleyball or badminton? Handball or racquetball? There are so many stories to tell they’d probably have to really narrow it down to the most interesting ones

@thomas and it turns out after a search, William G Morgan invented it as an option for older YMCA members who were too creaky for basketball, based on badminton.

@geordie wait, volleyball came after badminton and was made for old folks?! That’s astonishing given what it has become

@geordie @erinrileyau I mean it would be nice to know how golf came to exist. It's probably unknowable. Maybe some fever dream half remembered.

@geordie @erinrileyau I live somewhere with multiple versions of polo being played regularly. It's bizarre. Often indistinguishable from football matches ... the players are very similar.
