Here’s a *new way to dice an onion* … 🧅 … that was discovered via a computer model 🧮It improves upon the traditional way (of evenly spaced X Y Z cuts), because that traditional style produces chunks of uneven sizes This one does better Item #5 in my latest “Linkfest” newsletter, free to read and subscribe 📬: https://buttondown.email/clivethompson/archive/linkfest-21-wooden-satellites-post-binary-fonts/

@clive or, and stay here with me, we just dice the damn onions, don't obsess over minuscule, irrelevant differences in mass of each little fragment, and not have nvidia "ai" units go through enough energy and water to power a medium sized country.Just a thought

@faraiwe lol yesThough in this case the computer model wasn’t AI at allJust some super lightweight JavaScript creating a geometric model you can drag around the screen

@clive I definitely try to cut it this way and enjoy the outcome. 🙂

@clive ...I just diced onions in the time it took for it to run.::stirs marinara::I recall a friend, who's a tech dweeb, once tried to participate in a TTRPG session with us. Seeing that filling a character sheet for the first time was mildly onerous, he proceeded to spend the next 3+hrs creating a excel worksheet to do that for him.We were wrapping up the session, he wasn't done tweaking it.

@clive nice! It’s basically the same as doing only the efficient radial cuts. Adopted!

@clive I already do it that way, probably because no one ever taught me knifework.

@Shunra Yeah, that’s the cool thing about it, it’s fairly close to doing radial cuts but just aiming a few inches away from the actual onion

@clive building an imaginary center point and cutting towards it. So all the size variation stays in the imaginary parts of the onion. Perfection!

@Shunra i’m really charmed by the craft of aiming for a point *beyond* the onion feels like a deeply extensible life lesson

@clive it’s all that lovely Euclidian geometry. Utterly practical, aesthetically pleasing, and a good part of lifelong learning. And of onions 🧅🧅🧅📐

@clive @John Huh. That’s pretty much how I cut onions simply because I don’t have the precision to hit that center point every time
