@pluralistic "The net energy efficiency of fossil fuels is about 37%."What's worse is that this is almost the *optimal case* for fossil fuels. Consumer internal combustion engine vehicles for example only convert 15-30% of available energy in the fuel into power at the wheels - that's after the initial 33% loss to convert+transport. Meanwhile EVs hit 75%+https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/evtech.shtml

@liaml @pluralistic Theoretical maximum efficiency for IC engines is in 30 percent region. Modern engines do achieve nearly that, which is good, but clearly this is a dead end.

@tomjennings@pluralistic @liaml closer to 45% than 30%. You are correct that engines get close to that today.

@bluGill @pluralistic @liaml I forget what my source was, but this stackexchange discussion explains both values tossed around (37%, 45%). Not to argue, I was only quoting from memory my working assumption. Like all things, "it's complicated", lol...from https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/98966/maximum-theoretical-efficiency-of-internal-combustion-engine"So in conclusion, after a careful look through the different links, I have to agree with Chase (with the above described additions), the efficiency limit dictated by thermodynamics is ~46%, and the 35% limit arrives when additional real-life considerations are taken into account. @tomjennings @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml And then you have weird stuff like the F1 engines that are essentially turbo-compound because they extract additional energy from the exhaust with an oversized turbine wheel that is captured electrically. Too complex for the consumer market. Can I please just have a $25k EV Civic with reasonable range? 100-150 hp should be plenty, no need for “silly mode”.

@acsawdey @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml Lol totally. IC is dead regardless. US cars are too goddamn fast. They make stupid people stupider. It's fun, and should be relegated to fun pursuits, not commuting, which should be public trans anyway. 100hp/2500 lbs is a lot. People need to check their priorities.

@tomjennings @acsawdey @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml Everytime I hear concerns over EV range, it quickly becomes a question of "How many times do you actually drive that far?". How much of it could be easily solved with easy IC/hybrid rental? So many times people act like they're completely helpless to organize a car rental.

@eccentriccog @tomjennings @acsawdey @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml I was a '12 Volt owner and I'm a current '21 Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge owner. The $25k, 100-ish hp, 100-mi range EV was invented over a decade ago. The Leaf sucked and Nissan is killing it because there is no US demand. A person saying such a vehicle is sufficient is failing to perceive how many others' transpo reqs differ significantly from theirs.Public charging infrastructure is terrible. Locations are inconvenient for distance travel. Pricing differs wildly/is ambiguous. Station max charge rate is hard to determine. Stations are broken in any number of ways.EVs don't charge at predictable rates. Owners have no documentation showing what level of charging performance to expect for varying conditions.Repair/service for EVs is in infancy. Even dealers have few techs that are certified. Barriers to entry mean very few independent shops can service EVs.

@wmacf @eccentriccog @tomjennings @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml I don’t consider 100 miles adequate range, and the Leaf sucked for other reasons too such as poor battery cooling. There is no demand for CARS in general in the US because SUVs avoid the environmental rules and hence are cheaper .. so many of them are just “tall cars” so they can be under the other rules. So yeah it’s a pipe dream until we can fix that structural problem. The charging network will happen as there is demand.

@acsawdey @eccentriccog @tomjennings @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml Oh, and one last thing: new EVs depreciate off a cliff almost instantly. This, and my previously listed factors, lead a majority of Americans to conclude that the current crop of EVs listed for sale new do not merit the honor of serving as their primary transportation. So we can have the ivory tower discussion about EV vs ICE energy efficiency, but that inarguable fact is meaningless to the buying public given all of the consumer downsides. And yes, you're right about the CAFE loopholes for larger vehicles. A whole-of-government approach is needed to align multiple incentives to make efficient EVs profitable to constructors, desirable to the public, and life-cycle competitive with ICE vehicles.

@wmacf @acsawdey @eccentriccog @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml Agreed. EVs are little more than a temporary patch, and a distraction. We need real public transportation. But mainly a fundamental rethink of how our culture works but, lol, we're infinity distance from that, here in the US at least. I expect this industrial culture to collapse of its dead weight, first.

@tomjennings @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml That's the petrol friendly number. The other half of the equation is the amount of energy used in drilling, pumping, shipping, refining and cleaning up the oil before you set it on fire. When you include both the numbers for petrol are far grimmer. And both are important - an EV might be 95+% efficient but the power has to be generated and potentially transmitted too. Even with a fairly bad grid the EV wins by miles but for hard numbers it matters

@tomjennings @bluGill @pluralistic @liaml IC technology is bad for this main reason. Whatever you want to believe actual efficiency is, the majority of energy consumed creates heat ( and pollution ) that is wasted. In this world of scarcity, we need technology that wastes as little as possible. In a climate that's warming, creating excess heat, for no good reason, is crazy.
