@stux What is ridiculous is that the government does not require a background check for the president.This is a long standing vulnerability that was the theme of the book/film Manchurian Candidate.

@stux alas, he *can* vote - New York law applies, even in Florida. New York allows anyone to vote who isn't *currently* actually *in* a prison/jail - parole, appeal, furlough, whatever.

@stux Technically the Constitution bars him from office for inciting insurrection but our esteemed Supreme Court decided to rip that section out of the document on their own. We don’t ban Convicted Felons from running for office generally so that jailing political opponents on political grounds can’t prevent them from legitimately achieving office someday. It was also hoped that the voting population would be intelligent enough not to vote in a real criminal. These 2 ideals obv require rethink.

@stux We did try to bar him from the ballot. He engaged in insurrection.But too many conservatives worship him now.

@stux sadly the US does not have a good track record with their presidents, especially if study older books/info on the oldest ( going back centuries) presidents. There not likely to improve now.

@stux no, he can vote. Florida (his home state) law allows felons to vote if the district the were convicted in (New York) allows felons to vote.

@stux I hope it doesn’t happen, but IF he gets elected again, I want to see how they handle visits to all the international partners that don’t allow convicted felons to enter their countries. But I guess Trump hated those visits anyway, so this might actually be a welcome excuse to let everybody come to him

@stux It sounds stupid but its a good thing. Else any state could charge a candidate with a felony, convict them to disqualify someone they don't like. We've seen too many States already make some crimes a felony that are applied unequally and we see many brown and black citizens disenfranchised. What we need is more safeguards for all citizens.
