I've prepared a race track through the city, searched for some fitting animated race maps, prepared tokens for every participant in the race and looked for some cool images for the players' vehicles. If they decide to do anything else but this race tonight, I'm going to flip the digital table. Don't know how yet but I would find a way.#ttrpg #pnp #GMing

@orangelantern You do recognize that the moment you put in that much prep for a very singular type of activity you absolutely guaranteed that your players will find that the least interesting thing to do that night, right?#TTRPG

@lextenebris@social.vivaldi.net Usually yes, but in this case I put this much effort into it, because it was their idea and they are pretty hyped about it, going on about it for weeks now. ;) So if they now go "let's be pirates instead" I think I'm in my full rights to flip the table.

@orangelantern The smart move would be to simply turn all of the vehicles into boats, the roads into currents, smile cunningly, and then say "well, you'll have to outrun the harbor guards first!"I have been screwed by "enthusiastic groups" who tell me one thing for weeks on end and immediately run away from it when it's in front of them too many times to trust human beings. This is why I don't run games with GMing or that require prep anymore.Everyone is much happier.

@lextenebris@social.vivaldi.net No prep in a pure online setup in a setting where visuals matter a lot doesn’t work that well in my experience. Running this game for four years now, so far the effort paid off in multitudes.

@orangelantern Why do visuals matter so much in your environment? That's just asking for pain on a regular basis if you have an environment that's going to involve a fair amount of dynamicism.Give me a Google doc, an audio channel, and 15 minutes warning and I can run just about anything anybody imagines at this point. The right tools for the right job.

@lextenebris@social.vivaldi.net Glad that it works for you. :)If you sit across a table with people, you have gestures and facial expressions at your disposal as well as an easier time understanding people if they talk over each other.Pure audio online play requires different rules. Also, I like visuals. It gives me joy preparing this and my players like them too. My online game is laden with animated maps, soundscapes and a lot of gimmicky effects. When we play together, we could do without, ofc, but why would we? It's fun.

@orangelantern I suppose you could teach people basic kindergarten manners of avoiding speaking over each other and if it happens to take turns. I've had to pass that level of education on a few times. There really aren't any mechanics that I could think of that I require visuals to communicate unless it's some sort of weird chit system that would take 45 minutes or something to put into a VTT, which I'm just not willing to do anymore. It's okay to enjoy the lonely fun of prep playing by yourself. You can say that. Most of the GMs I know end up enjoying that more than they do spending time with the players because the players just end up wrecking all the prep. Which is why zero prep systems have become so popular over the last several decades. But it begs the question of what was the purpose of the original post? Was it just flexing to say that you have a bunch of disposable time to burn on preparing a session? After all, you could have actually talked about the stuff that you prepared, got feedback on it, enjoyed passing it on to other people. But that's not what you did. So I'm curious what you think the purpose of your original engagement with the world was? I'm a curious kind of guy
