The braking system on my car failed yesterday (I've got lots of amber glow). At this point, I'm going to need to accept the repair bill, whatever it is.I think my mind has been made up on if I'm going to keep this Prius long term but maybe I'll get lucky ...

(Brakes were at about 80%, and I've got cavitation in the system when I push the peddle so it might just need a flush and bleed, although it imples water got into the system from somewhere)

@ncommander it is no fun to have the brakes failing on you. I had this issue once and it was pretty scary. It was an easy and cheap fix, had to change the master cylinder, it also helped that my godfather was my mechanic in Brazil.

@loop0 this is proving to be basket case car. I'll be a position to get out of it 1-2 months from now.

@drscriptt could be either, but mechanic said it was fine. Ultimate cause was faulty sensor. $400, but this is why I have a reserve budget.

@ncommander Fluids don't compress well. You likely have air in your brake lines. Fresh fluid, hydraulic wrenches and a vacuum bleeder should fix it. The times I've seen air in brake lines were mostly from a leak caused by not changing the pads.I believe there are some bleeding valves that function essentially like check valves. I've never used them but they seemed promising.Just wear safety goggles because brake fluid is not good. It can strip paint too. Disposal of used brake fluid is essentially the same as used motor oil. You'd need to check local regulations to be certain.

@ncommander The good news is that brake fluid is kinda strange. It can be tested with a multimeter for resistance. As long as it's flushed, it should be fine.
