There is nothing a single person has ever ever ever ever done or will ever ever ever ever do in all of time and space that merits paying them 56 billion dollars— Madness. Obscenity. Ludicracy

@futurebird Back in the 1990s. I said similar to my, then, boss at work. His reply was that if you don't pay them that, they will leave the country, He didn't take kindly to my reply of “Good!” Could be one of the reasons I was later made redundant from that job!

@futurebird or, to be quite honest, even 1 billion dollars. I do believe there should be a hard limit to individual wealth of 999 million dollars. A billion is simply more money than any one human needs or deserves. Of course, the kind of person who would accumulate 999 million would find a loophole...

@futurebird "In Q1 2024, Tesla reported that it made 433,371 vehicles. Of those, 386,810 were actually sold. This means the automaker has an extra 46,561 vehicles it didn’t sell."https://jalopnik.com/so-many-unsold-teslas-are-piling-up-that-you-can-see-th-1851526312Tesla's market cap was several times GM's and Ford's, despite lower profits and revenues. Most of tgat value was hype. The expectation that Tesla would disrupt tge auto industry with EVs, and self-driving tech that never existed. The rest of the auto industry has figured out how to make decent EVs.Elon has completely squandered the massive first mover advantage he had. There's now a glut of EVs.One in every 10 cars Tesla makes isn't selling, and is sitting in an open-air lot somewhere.Elon's talk about Tesla now being an AI company was hype to keep the share price inflated long enough for him to make an exit. He's now trying to rip as much cash as he can personally from Tesla before the bottom falls out of its share price.

@ajsadauskas If you look at Tesla's published accounts, as I did recently, you'll notice their inventory has been increasing dangerously every year, to the point where - IIRC - they're essentially using their loans to finance their unsold products. This is not the sign of a healthy and viable company.@futurebird

@futurebird If I owned Tesla stock, I would consider that theft. Giving away a big fraction of the value of my shares that will not bring me an equal or greater return. In my view paying Elon a billion or two to *leave would probably increase the value of my shares. If they have $56B laying around and don’t want it for expanding the business, just give it to current shareholders owners in proportion to their holdings. The marginal benefit of giving it to Elon is not high enough.

@futurebird Renumeration has never been about the value of one's work. It's about one's status and ability to coerce. Did kings earn their lands that the serfs worked? Did conquerors earn the lands and spoils paid for by blood? Musk is doing what kings and conquerors have done since armies and nations have existed: taking what he can.

@futurebird - I agree wholeheartedly. It is utterly inconceivable that anyone should be worth that kind of money, money that, like s**t, is of the most use when spread around. It is an utter perversion of economics and an affront to those who try to survive on the dregs after these egotists have creamed off so much.

@futurebird Assuming Tesla has sold 6 million vehicles in total (the exact number is probably lower, but not far off) that bonus is equivalent to almost $10k for every vehicle they've ever sold. That's on top of his existing compensation. Even if one were to argue it was "deserved", I don't see how that works out financially. The company's revenue has been slowing down; that kind of compensation bump seems irresponsible just looking at the business side of things.

@futurebird Here's the problem as I see it:Capitalism creates wealth and can sustain the world, properly managed.Capitalism also concentrates wealth, but if we make sure everyone benefits, the locomotive of commerce can pull us all down the tracks to a modicum of prosperity. But who's going to do this taxation and distribution - but can't be bought off? Because what we have now, all the regulators are in the trick bag for the owners. What about the workers? We know how...

@futurebird just like an office job should pay less than a labour job but they don't, people complain about sending a few emails for $100K a year while someone builds their house for minimum wage. This is what needs to be addressed, not "low" pay of office workers.

@futurebird Not to mention that he wants that amount to work part time, while he devotes most of his attention to X and SpaceX, and he is actively wrecking Tesla by alienating customers. Liberals and progressive people are interested in electric cars, the wingnuts he courts aren't, so Tesla sales are dropping. Tesla stockholders should tell him to get lost.

@chu @ajsadauskas Years and years ago despite living in NYC and not really knowing how to drive I can remember musing “well if I ever HAD to get a car I could get a tesla that would be kinda neat… maybe I could even hack it something..” I don’t even like to admit that now (though once they get bricked and go crazy n the junk market it might be fun to take them apart.) That’s all gone and e-bikes are more fun.

@chu @ajsadauskas I also remember thinking what a smart move it would be for tesla to release a luxury e-bike— LOL as if!It’s like he did everything possible to drive away the contemplative tech nerds with an arty side that were kind of driving the whole brand. When I thought these things I didn’t know about the build quality problems— the bad working conditions— just the haze and image tesla had from media and advertising.

@futurebird @chu @ajsadauskas The fact that cars are the only vehicle Tesla releases or talks about shows that the EV component has always been, for the people at top, branding. If they wanted a true EV, environmental revolution they would've been first in line to bid on new rail contracts, they would have a whole line of ebikes and other PEV.
