I wonder how illegal it would be if you opened up a VHS rental store today, and had unofficial VHS copies of modern films, dubbed from either Netflix or uhd 4k blurays

@foone Wonder how the analog loophole would play into this idea.

@foone feel like it'd only be noticable because of the amount of 📼 they'd be moving for non educational purposes

I'd be paying for a bluray per VHS tap, so I didn't make any extra "copies".And you can't DMCA me: it's not digital.

@foone no more illegal than how all business is essentially scam in the 4k age, due to the extensive corners being cut & inferior products nobody wants being delivered for extortionary prices with the strings of perpetual payment attached. Tbh, a VHS bootleg store would be the most legal and ethical business in almost any 2024 plaza. But you should also include inde programs because what's the point of a new video store without supporting the artists keeping the formats alive?

@foone its actually included in the cost of the streaming services- you're paying for the ability to watch any time and anywhere, you're simply adding an accessibility aid to the equation. That'll save you money too, you won't have to buy all those blurays of Got Mail and Forrest Gump to dump at the out of town goodwill that never has anything good anyways later.

@mdhughes @foone check out what video videodrome in Atlanta does.Basically they do dvd-rs for rental, instead of lending their originals. As far as I'm aware, they haven't had any static.

@foone Exploiting the analogue loophole. Getting it downsampled to analogue might be fun, though. Do Blu-ray players with analogue outputs even exist?

@sobornost no! the DMCA is specifically for DIGITAL copyright infringement, which this can't be as it's not digital

@foone do it as a membership club and don't actually charge for the rentals, and maybe just maybe you'll be okay.

@foone I'm pretty sure this violates the unread terms of use on streaming services but I like it as an idea. If you remember "digilog" audio cassettes, they were made in his way.But what I imagine is a print on demand redbox kiosk, probably working the way Famicom Disk vending machines worked in 80s Japan, with the bonus of internet connectivity

@FlatFootFox pan & scan, obviously. This is 4:3 always. The only issue is having to manually re-edit all these films

@foone Think you could fit a tape head inside of a VHS to write onto an endless-loop in close to real time?Like one of those compact cassette to 3.5mm adapters.

@griibor not really. VHS tapes are helical scan rather than linear like compact cassettes, so you can't really make an adapter

@foone I was thinking.I assume the head's too big to put in the cassette at the right angle, even ignoring how you'd power the thing.
