For those of you who write fiction, how do you feel about working on a story in a notebook or in a laptop in a busy public place like an airport, stadium or lively park? (I have a friend who wrote the entire first draft of her screenplay on a phone— madness! but it worked!)

@futurebird I used to write that way all the time! I loved to write on my phone (but then, seeing as most of my writing was just fanfic etc, I'm not that proud of it...)

@futurebird When I still drank booze, I loved writing and reading at the bar in a good restaurant. Slovenly old hootch dispensaries where you feel you ought to wash your hands /before/ you use the bathroom - no. Just no.

@futurebird A crowd roar is fine, distinguishable words (like announcements) drop me right out. Ditto programming.

@futurebird I totally did the stereotype thing and worked on my screenplay at coffee shops. It's kind of nice to have a place to go, and a place to leave when you've gotten through enough for that day. I have tinnitus so being in complete silence is way more annoying for me now than it used to be, even though I really don't like being in a crowd.

@futurebird I don't write fiction but I write song lyrics and imo the sweet spot is being passively on the move. Train rides are perfect.

@futurebird for most of my childhood and teens, I carried a notebook, and write in it when I got the chance, though I often had to conceal it.Nearly everything I wrote for the creative writing course I took in college was written riding on rattling old buses, or while at a bus stop on a busy road. Then I had to type it on college lab computers. But as I got older, more and more I found I had to seek to quiet to write.

@futurebird for a number of years, when my kids were at their littlest, my only writing time was on the bus. I had a small laptop (11” Air) and a pair of noise canceling headphones. Which were a critical part of the thing! And gave me an excuse for story-specific playlists, which could help snap my brain into storyspace faster.

@futurebird My first NaNoWriMo project (2015) was partly written on a laptop in airports. It was fine. I would not try it on a phone or tablet: touch screens don't like my fingers.

@futurebird One of the first things I did when I started writing full time was head to a local cafe. I realized, after the first sentence I tried to write had more words I overheard from the table next to me than what came from my head, that this was a terrible idea.

@futurebird When I had more creative muse energy I used to write a lot on buses. It worked fine, though when it was pornography I had to be a bit more circumspect about potential for fellow passengers to see my screen.

@futurebird I used to love writing on pubtrans, in cafes, etc. but Covid put an end to that. Just not as much fun masked.
