Offhand thoughts:I was watching old cartoons with my daughter the other day and one thing that's really striking is how, roughly through the 80s and most of the 90s let's say, cartoons were very sincere, very much specifical for kids, not adults. Interestingly, this seems to me to be different from earlier (e.g. Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry) and later (e.g. Powerpuff Girls).

@ZachWeinersmith my generation (early X, late boomer) was very serious about wanting adults to put childish things behind them. Which, of course led to arbitrary designations of what things are for adults and what are for children. Its all nonsense.

@ZachWeinersmith Looney Tunes etc. were originally produced as theatrical shorts, that could be shown before movies intended for mixed (or even adult) audiences. There was something of a phase change in I'd say the 70s, when there were a lot of dedicated full-length shows specifically for what I remember as "Saturday morning" cartoons. Then we got cable and channel diversification, and cartoons aimed again at a more diverse audience (some them quite good, e.g. Avatar, Kim Possible, etc.)

@ZachWeinersmith Gen X grew up on the former and then made the latter when their careers had progressed far enough to have creative control.

@ZachWeinersmith Gen X has often been characterised as the least parented generation. Just plop 'em down in front of Saturday morning cartoons, I'm sure it'll be fine.

@ZachWeinersmith Would you believe Reagan might be partially to blame? His FTC cut regulations against advertising to children, which led to the rise of advertising cartoons like G.I. Joe and Transformers. Since these shows were primarily designed to sell toys to children, they were written specifically for children.
