@lkundrak a sir or sirette in the locomotive just grabbing the handle and making it go fast, not realizing the proper blinkenlight on the end of the track had the wrong color on it, until all the wrong blinkenlighten in the cab go very much blink, but then it could be kinda too late

@pony i guess i get it that the end, it's inevitable that there will be situations where a single brain fart in front of the controls will cause a crash. but i'd expect we'd have figured a way to augment the ape brain with a big flashy thing that would communicate "bro you're not clear to go" or something

@lkundrak we do but we do not take it very seriously and we have postponed taking it seriously until we have the big european flashy thing for it everywhere, which we don't take quite that seriously either, but have set up a deadline for when we want to

@pony @lkundrak let me rephrase the above with a picture, so that sirs who are not train enthusiasts understand:

@pony their infrastructure also already prevents such accidents, not sure if ETCS or something else but @oleksandr should know.

@vbabka @oleksandr I think they have some bit less horrible signalling but nothing too advanced either (also no 160+), not sure

@liskin @pony @lkundrak would ETCS be installed within a railway station area anyway?

@pony @liskin @lkundrak Honestly don’t know, I think I read it somewhere a long time ago that given the amount of switches and therefore possible paths that have to be monitored it is not feasible to install ETCS within large station areas. But it may be some bullshit, hence the question…

@mlekar @liskin @lkundrak I think it was a potential problem at extra large yards where you could run out of channels but there is an option of not using gsm-r now (another big pain point though) or other means, still you’d not skip the main tracks
