I’m crying on the bus (again) because some middle school kids decided that for their “design challenge” they envision a food delivery drone that could fly high enough and fast enough that no one could shoot it down. And no one asked why someone would want to shoot down a food delivery drone— or why you couldn’t just drive a truck.

@futurebird Turns out, there's serious research money going into that stuff.In a previous job, I was also working on how not to turn such drones into weapons, by making the communications link resilient and encrypted.Granted, our scenarios were food delivery OR emergency supplies, never emergency food supplies...

@futurebird Yeah, I'd flunk them too - there are *reasons* why shooting down things that fly quite high and rather fast is an important strategic goal, so attempting it fails the "design challenge". Try again next year with a drone that flies low and slow enough not to get shot down.

@futurebird reminds me of how I was reading tech papers on South Korea Cybersecurity Ministry, and one of them was about a group of young girls in early middle school who built a robot from a complex kit (that undergraduates in Britain would struggle with), as well as making the robot look pretty they were also simultaneously working on "how do we keep the control system to the robot secure, so hackers from the North or China cannot access it?"

@futurebird my most charitable interpretation as to why someone would want to shoot down a food delivery drone: one side in a war is actively trying to cut off food supplies.As for why not drive a truck? It could be extremely dangerous for the driver to go through an active warzone, and minimizing harm as much as possible while providing food aid might have been a goal for these designers.Even so, this doesn't change how fucked up it is to even have to design around such problems.
