What's insane is how many old men come down into my industry out of retirement. They had very rich careers, but they hit their 60s and 70s having spent all that retirement savings on houses, renovations, boats, car collections, and just idly blowing their time.They used to pretend Social sec was like a forced bonus, but now it's their primary lifeline, and it's strange to see. Even old people I knew for a long time have changed their tune, they used to warn me not to count on it, but they haggle and bicker with the government to make sure they get every last cent. I wish it would just go insolvent in 5 years

@WashedOutGundamPilot It is mathematically insolvent in less than 10 years. But maybe it will really drag on for the whole 10 years. Also maybe a tech revolution happens and they get the last laugh again but they can't really count on it.

@WashedOutGundamPilot Social Security was instituted to destroy the multi-generational household and profit the real-estate industry and create the retirement home industry by taking Grandpa and Grandma out of the family house for them to live by themselves and depend upon outside resources (and pay a bunch) to take care of their declining health instead of living with children and grandchildren.

@vrilium This guy probably had to operate as the lynchpin of the family, likely not much fault of his own - he burned his own life at the altar to care for his wife & kids. If anything, his work today is an indictment that they haven't rescued him to return the kindness. But some of the olds prefer this, they bought into the scheme and they refuse to move in w/ the kids, actually BE a grandparent - this bachelor life might be his dream, he may beat them off with a stick every year saying "I'm not gonna be listening to a bunch of squealing kids all day I have my own life!"
