realization: since a USB 3 device can work with two high-speed diffpairs, power, and ground, you could define an embedding of USB 3 over SFP and make your thumbdrive 1000% cooler@0x47df

@whitequark @0x47df Could you use your drive over a 10km data cable? For when you don't have space on your desk naturally. Maybe you'd need to relax some timing stuff from the spec

@rf @0x47df I think so, and I think there would be timings to relax (power management comes to mind)

@whitequark@mastodon.social @rf@mas.to @0x47df@duckpon.de I think if you present the cable as a bunch of hubs, you wouldn't need to relax timings (but now you got stuff in the data path, so the utility is debatable)

@rf@mas.to @whitequark@mastodon.social @0x47df@duckpon.de some limitations are quite impossible to beat though, like USB 2 has awfully tight timings that cannot be loosened (mostly because it's cost optimized for a single differential pair), that it cannot be extended to more than ~159m, and practically, more than ~50m is rarely seen.I think you can fake some stuff a bit to make it work with longer lengths, but I don't think it's gonna work with all devices, and it's not gonna look to the computer and the device in quite the same way.

@whitequark@mastodon.social @0x47df@duckpon.de Tried that in 2022. I can confirm it works. (Still no time to actually finish and publish that...)

@whitequark@mastodon.social @0x47df@duckpon.de For PHY compatibility, one should guard both sides with a known-good USB hub IC, not all USB 3 PHYs can handle the distorted LFPS to start a link it seems (VIA can't, Intel can). But the bare-minimum version is literally just two data lines directly into SFP+, with 50 Ω resistors to bypass receive detection. And you can sell this circuit board with barely any electronics for $200 as a corporate conference room solution! Don't ask how I knew (I couldn't believe I've spent $200 just to reverse-engineer 1-bit of information). The picture is my own implementation.

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @whitequark@mastodon.social and it costs $20 instead of $2000, SFP+ included. You can find old Huawei SFP+ from decommissioned ISP servers at Shenzhen flea markets for a few bucks each. I got 10 for $20, truly unbelievable.
