Stack up enough of them and you end up with an adult whose memory of their childhood is "my parents enjoyed hitting me." I have aunts/uncles who ended up getting beat by their teenaged sons, and honestly I don't think negatively of this outcome.

Of course, such events aren't punishments, they're panic reactions.Children benefit best from punishments which are laid out for them: "if you do this, then this will happen." If you use beatings as punishment, you'll be doing them routinely, otherwise you create a chaotic environment for your kid. If you beat your kid regularly...then you end up in the situation I described.
