       @interfluidity I believe something similar — that for many people, especially men, who doubt their own intelligence, social skills, and ability to compete in an increasingly complex and intellectual world, Trump represents evidence that they can be successful on their own terms.

Constant defiance is part of the dominance display.Group leadership typically occurs by rising up a hierarchical organization, but organizations don't allow outrageous executives. Outrage is vital for displaying power, defiance, and attracting attention. So the new leaders are shameless montebanks.
