@kaia@brotka.st I'm sure which models exactly are good right now because I'm not interesting in anything post 2009. But in general the the rule of thumb to consider for buying cost effective refurbished hardware is that the price will usually hit is sweet spot at 4-6 years after release because that is the exact point when computers get written off by organizations who have bought them new in bulk.So you should be looking for 2018-2020 models now.

@kaia Probably something from the E (entry-level) and L (mid-range) series. The models are separated by the screen size (E16 would be 16") and gen number. Anything from the current generation and last generation would probably be fine (Intel - 13XX/12XX; AMD - 7XXX/6XXX). In my experience T and X series are overpriced for what you get when buying new. If buying used is an option, look for T (normal size) and X (compact) series only, because they are usually the same price as E and L new.

@kaia Also keep in mind that Windows 11 supports only Intel 8th gen, AMD Ryzen 2nd gen and newer CPUs, if your friend is a Windows user and buying used is an option.

@kaiaI recently bought a #Thinkpad P14s Gen 2 AMD model on kleinanzeigen.de from a local re-seller and I am super-happy. 😍 Of course, price for a 2nd hand model heavily depends on condition. Mine was 450€ and it looked like never used before. Got an additional RAM upgrade to 32GB and a docking station, both also 2nd hand.

@kaia got mine used for pretty cheap (office surplus) but had to replace the SSD; and being a newer model, its frame is weaker
