I've said it before and I'll say, again, & again, & again, that jamming "AI" into everything without considering the privacy and security implications is a) going to cause a major breach of at least two US laws, and b) just a really silly and terrible idea which is going to put a lot of people in danger, and this "recall" shit is among the worst of it i've seen. Windows 11 has just become a complete capture system disguised as an OS. Every keystroke, work session, video call, and downtime window, logged, correlated, and extrapolated. And they're trying to sell it to you as being a SERVICE.So let me be as clear as possible about this: Fuck That, Forever.Roll it BACK, microsofthttps://www.theverge.com/2024/6/3/24170305/microsoft-windows-recall-ai-screenshots-security-privacy-issues

Since I don't think some people are grasping how bad this is:Bank Data;Health Data;Passwords;Student Data; Privileged Information (NDA's contracts, etc.)AddressesUnless a) your job has some version of windows that doesn't have these systems and tools in it, and b) work/life firewalls are PRISTINE, and I mean literally ZERO interconnections, even via email or calendars, the entire windows 11 OS has just become a threat surface.

And for anyone who's like "PShh! no organization dealing with sensitive data is gonna allow machines that ship with this into their org's networking ecosystem!": You're wrong.I *Just This Last Week* got a new laptop from my university and copilot was already enabled, and pressing the "copilot" (reskinned context menu) button overrides even the group policy editor-level fix to turn it off, immediately reactivating it and resetting the GPE toggle to default.So. @Wolven @neurovagrant To put it bluntly: Many people do not give a shit. They want people to learn use CLI and GNU or just… suffer I guess? There is an absolute awful amount of Linux elitism out there. On a positive note: There're huge improvements about this happening for years now with communities becoming more welcoming, hardware vendors improving software and distros (as well as Gnome, KDE and other DEs) becoming gradually better.Unfortunately… ClamAV / ClamTK ain't part of it.

@realcaseyrollins @Wolven Any normal Windows application you run will have access to the database for this thing.BTW "Windows 11 has just become a complete capture system disguised as an OS." has been true since Windows 10, which captures your keystrokes and other system analytics and sends them to Microsoft without being able to completely opt out. People are just going apeshit because they heard the word "AI" even though that is the least relevant part of this story, they're using it for OCR and search on your own data, this isn't any different than Spotlight on the Mac released in 2005.

@realcaseyrollins @Wolven 99% of the bitching about AI is irrelevant when it's being used to index your own data and isn't being shared on the cloud, which is apparently how Recall works.I'm not defending Recall, it should be opt-in not opt-out.

@realcaseyrollins I don't actually understand how microsoft fucked this up so bad because Windows 11 requires a TPM, so they could have encrypted the database at rest using a key on the TPM that no third party application could access. This works out of the box on a Macintosh for a very long time, I don't know if Windows has an integrated TPM keyring but it's 100% possible now.

@Wolven I think you're "missing the forest, for the trees"..Microsoft rolled-out a system, in Windows Vista, whereby EVERYTHING YOU SEARCHED FOR, on any Windows machine, *that search* was forwarded back to Microsoft, with, of course, which machine, in which network, it was done-on..Think about that..A hospital searches for "John Smith carposes sarcoma" & suddenly Microsoft gets automatically-informed of John Smith's being in that hospital, & having AIDS..Police-stations, government, hospitals, EVERYthing. What Microsoft's doing, now, with Windows 11, ISN'T NEW, except in apparent-form.Microsoft was doing this shit back decades ago.I remember when The Register reported that Microsoft had enabled cloud-backup for everybody AND HAD A COPYRIGHT LICENSE WHICH CLAIMED COPYRIGHT ON ALL CLOUD-STORED DOCUMENTS..Apparently they yielded to the pushback, then, quickly....but what we're seeing isn't "mistakes",..what we're seeing is *fundamental-and-intrinsic* malevolence:DarkHexad: Narcissism / Machiavellianism / Sociopathy-Psychopathy / Nihilism / Sadism / Systemic-DishonestySeems like 5 of those are well-represented, to me.. at least..( contrast with HEXACO https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HEXACO_model_of_personality_structure : )WHEN SOMEONE KEEPS TELLING YOU WHAT THEY REALLY ARE, WAKE THE FUCK UP & BELIEVE THEIR ASSERTION!!..is the lesson *we all* ought be taking from it,& ought have been taking from it *decades* ago.All the dishonest anti-competitive behavior, all the abuses, all the bullying..You can read "A New Brand World", about branding ( read also Al Ries's book "The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding" if you care about that! ),..and in that book the author mentions a marketing company which had the Microsoft account..it was *destroying their souls*..The CEO of the marketing company sent 'round an email to all people:"Ding dong the wicked witch is dead."& they ALL knew they'd been relieved of that cancerous association, that the financial-cost of severing that contract had been accepted *to save their lives*.Please understand: I'm wanting you to survive, to be viable, to live: I want you *getting out from* toxic-relationship with machiavellian & malevolant "other".Switch to Ubuntu-family Linux or something. With the locally-deployable AI's now avaiable ( Whisper speech-to-text replaces Dragon Naturally Speaking, ttbomk ), now there's no *valid* reason to be remaining in the grip of the entity that has so consistently ( from STAC Electronics code being stolen by Microsoft, & their gaslighting about it, back in the DOS 6.20 days, through all the abuses since then ) *proven* its malevolence.Sever all ties: as with *any* narcissistic-sociopath:*go no-contact*.Just the opinion of a guy who's read *far* too many journalism items by Mad Mike McGee & Charlie Demerjian ( & many others ) on Microsoft's evil behavior, is all.._ /\ _

@Wolven I agree. Microsoft is making a moronic boo-boo here.https://reactos.org/This might be an option... I have not tried it yet. Many of us need Windows for desktop software.I prefer Lunix on the server if not a BSD. These are not as complicated to install as you might think, nor to operate. And while the fediverse sucks ass for lots of stuff, there is no shortage of Lunix help here if you ask!

@neurovagrant @Wolven sure we can. AV itself is an unnecessary risk surface merely not intentionally choosing to run malware (ie windows, iOS, googled android/google play) itself is an unambiguously better setup for most people and is how most people are going to be compromised. You don't need a complicated special purpose program( AV ) for that -- you can usually tell that from a glance.

@Wolven I get it: Telling people to just use Linux is not the solution, but the idea what you somehow need a much more expanded set of skills to "use" Linux is also outdated. In fact so many people have so very little skills when it comes to computers that the first system that gets shoved under their noses is the one they stick with and have no issues with. So we need to start solving the problems when they are still in schools.

@Wolven The thing I find so infuriating about this is that I *paid* for a Windows 11 license. Sure, I only use it for the gaming machine, and I hope to eliminate that eventually, so could it be worse but...It's just utterly obnoxious that MSFT took my money for this product but that's not enough. They have to keep making it more and more terrible (required MSFT account login, advertising, auto-installed crapware, telemetry you can't disable, absurd "AI" spyware, etc etc).

@WolvenI use pirated Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC as my daily. Yes, I trust a modified ISO from a trustworthy but now rather inactive torrent uploader far more than I trust Win11. Burner Win11 only on external drives when I have to use proctoring software. Before 11 fully went to hell on me a year ago, it kept resetting 99% of my privacy tweaks after updates and Wireshark would start going crazy in idle. LTSC rarely re-enables anything and even then it is minor stuff that doesnt matter much.

@Wolven Lots of folks pushing Linux as the answer to Win 11 Recall failing to catch all the replies of people not able to get Linux working only to be given buckets of links and RTFM. What I've seen last couple of weeks: Forum threads yelling at new people to "post correctly" who need help instead of pointing them to an answer first before admonishing them. Arguments in posts on the Fediverse asking "So what's an APT and why can't I install a program from the web like I do in Windows?" and no one answering it in 20 replies. People unsure what distribution to learn on because everyone is warning people away from Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, Gentoo, etc. leading users to believe everything they look at is bad instead of seeing people are only jocking for their distro to be their first experience. (Should seem familiar: welcome to Mastodon! Be sure to pick the right server you wanna start on.) It will never be the year of the Linux Desktop, because the same inferiority complexes that have plagued Linux techbros for decades are still there. (I don't have a good answer how to fix this...)It also will never be the year right now because Linus Torvalds isn't wrong: Linux Software Management is hot garbage and all the new answers aren't replacing the bad or old ones, they're just multiplying the problem. When an app developer has to have solutions for 15+ ways to install a program ignoring Mac and Windows... something went wrong somewhere. (XKCD nailed this problem in a single take. https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/standards_2x.png )I'm disheartened to hear Copilot overrides GPO. The upshot of Recall is it is coming by default to Copilot PCs with an NPU present (and it is able to be opted-out on Home systems by knowledgeable users). Thankfully, that is not the bulk of systems out today. I hope that stays the case over the coming months.

Probably a combination of the first two, since MS showed multiple times how incompetent they are. Intelligent storage deleting user data in the Creator's update for example.

@Wolven Even having the requisite knowledge, skills, etc etc, I'm still stuck with a machine that I can't have admin access to and be able to connect to my corporate network. So, if they opted to deploy 11 with Copilot, it's not like I can just install Ubuntu. Telling people to "just install another OS" is essentially victim blaming when the people doing the victimization are the ones that need to stop.@mechisian

@Wolven @bujiraso Copilot has been around for quite a while. Recall is a new feature that is coming with the so-called AI PCs that are starting to ship now-ish. They are also calling it "Copilot+ PC" (not trying to make sense of Microsoft branding). So, unless your university managed to get hold of those devices (currently only ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus, it seems) a few weeks before they are officially shipped, then it is unlikely that you have one, so you should be safe from Recall on that device.

@Wolven "Corporations won't want this on their employee systems!"Except for all the middle managers who think this will be the Nanny spyware they need to "stay on top of" their employees. And to the people saying "just use linux", ignoring the most obvious reasons why that can't always work, let's say you could do that. THE WHOLE REST OF THE UNIVERSITY STAFF WILL STILL BE USING WINDOWS RECALL.And all the data YOU send to those machines will still be archived on those other Windows machines. Looking around at the folks I wouldn't trust folks around me to keep their systems secure. A University will be a DELICIOUS target for Recall malware.

@Wolven not to mention even if you aren’t running a Windows 11 machine Recall running on anyone who you video call with or otherwise interact will capture your personal information. So not just coworkers but collaborators at other orgs, your broker, doctors, admins at a clinic, staff at your insurer. This will exfiltrate far more than users of Windows own information - it will also sweep up anything and anyone they have access to as part of their job.

@Wolven sorry the button does WHAT NOW?Also… as a Linux lover/user I would absolutely NOT tell you “install Linux” as you’ve clearly stated this device was given to you by your org, not to mention this is NOT the panacea everyone thinks it is. The issue here isn’t what OS you’re using, it’s that CoPilot, it’s associated features, Recall, etc, are so fucking user hostile they can’t even accept defaults disabling them.
