@tersenurse Why are they concerned about "survival" ?I could understand if you are directly in Trump's orbit, if you were a fake elector, or at Jan. 6. The idea that these things were criminal would be scary. But, that's not the majority of his supporters. I can understand why trans people, and those with immigrants in their family, and even anyone who could get pregnant might talk about "survival" under Trump. But, what threat do ordinary Trump supporters face?

@tersenurse I suppose it's "the border" --I have such a hard time processing those lies. I guess they must think that scary immigrants will get them?Or maybe it's that idea they float about "Christians being persecuted" -- which is beyond wild in the US. This is a de facto 'Christian Nation' not only is it the majority religion, but most institutions and companies cater to the needs of Christians above all others. But there really are people who feel... attacked.

@futurebird @tersenurse I posted the other day about an encounter with a lumberyard employee who seems to take that view. I think he was confiding (or threatening?) that he was in a militia. My late father went over the deep end into Fox land late in his life. Before that he hadn't been so crazy. Absolutely we can't underestimate the power of propaganda in media and social media right now. Logic has nothing to do with it. It is emotion and distortion.

I am not in touch with him, but my sister is in contact with his brother, and she sees his facebook posts.He has destroyed his very comfortable life and gone quite mad. His family are afraid of him as he is manifesting lots of irrational anger, and he has guns.It has nothing to do with any rational reason, except influence by a social media echo chamber, and exploitation and enhancement of latent tendencies

@futurebird @tersenurse There was an interesting New Yorker article a while ago that talked about the difference between beliefs you might actually act on, in the sense of literally organizing your life as if they are true, and "symbolic beliefs" that you purport to believe but you don't actually act on--except, perhaps, for some kind of symbolic action.The article noted that while sometimes people actually do show up with guns to liberate the QAnon child harvesting dungeon or what have you, most people who claim to believe in these things *don't* do that. They just talk about it.They claim that they're under the thumb of a totalitarian state that is about to haul them off to camps, but they'll do so in a public manner that would get them scooped up immediately if this were true, suggesting that this is some different level of belief.(And this kind of thing isn't exclusive to the right, at all. The article made me do a lot of introspection about the extent to which I do it.)However, I do think the distinction may be porous. The people whose response is to accumulate large arsenals of weapons that they claim are for self-defense seem like they're in some in-between state. They may not be forming a secret army but they are doing something that is expensive and somewhat dangerous.
