There’s certain technology that I earnestly wonder why we abandoned it. For example, digital audio players (DAPs). These devices provided something smartphones don’t: a distraction-free way of playing music. And they were way more personal because everything on your DAP was put there by you! They were a collection of your genuine taste!

@atomicpoet I still use one for the audio books I ripped from my days of having audio books on things like CDs. It's nice to take it for a walk and just listen to a book.

@atomicpoet @mauroThey sell some nice basic models on aliexpress. often branded as "radio for old man"which I find hilarious. But apparently the old man is me. Also making one is a fun project. The OS on those aliexpress players tends to be.... deeply lacking. (fine for music, not as great for audio books.)

@atomicpoet I mean, there’s a whole market of DAPs out there, if you look into the audiophile scene. It’s just a niece thing nowadays but it’s still there and improving.
