Bad idea for a scifi story:In 1860, a paranormal investigator discovers that there's a sun-worshiping cult that sacrifices a virgin to The Sun every year. It turns out last year, they messed up the ritual, and the victim escaped at the last moment.Cue the Carrington event. A massive geomagnetic storm that caused auroras as far south as Colombia. The investigator is then paid to infiltrate the cult and disrupt their ritual every time, as it saves Western Union a lot on electrical costs.

For the low price of one paranormal operative employed full time and some extra fire-proofing at the stations, you get free telegraph power, no batteries needed! And as a bonus, the sky looks awesome.

@foone Reading about the Carrington Event.> It was observed and recorded independently by British astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson—the first records of a solar flare. So if it was discovered by two guys named Richard, why is it called the Carrington Event and not…BIG DICK ENERGY

@foone the only thing its missing is being set in the year 2160 and that the cult uses borg tech and sacrifices the virgins by using a reverse 3D printer that sucks the sacrifice up one deconstructed bead at a time. Still working on that qwerty keyboard alphabet song, but it you wanna see the 2160 version i could probably do that too as a 1980s shot on video Z-grade scifi at some point, its an excuse to build greebled scifi halls and kiosks.

@foone I want this, but set in another star system in an alien society. It’s still 1860 and the telecommunications company is still Western Union

@foone There was a classic by Arthur C. Clarke (I think) where a cult is manually writing out the nine billion names of God, after which the universe will supposedly end. They call in a computer consultant to speed up the process. It does not end well.

@mike805 I dunno. As an ADHD person I have a lot of trouble with finishing projects. I think those monks were very happy, they finally completed their mission.
