Yeah since I moved back home to OpenSuSE, I decided an update to my nickname would be sufficient.

@seleaSuSE was my first distribution, back in the days of 6.3 or something. Too long ago. I went away, tried Slack, sticked with Gentoo a few too many years and then started to work somewhere where SLES was widely used. I was impressed and since then I went back to OpenSuSE.

@paul Well since Linux is to mainstream now, I think BSD is a good choice :)Never used it beyond running a few service on it. Maybe I should install it on another machine@sotolf

@selea @paul @sotolf I highly recommend trying #OpenBSD on an old thinkpad. #FreeBSD is good, too. I want to try #NetBSD as well. Haven't tried #DragonflyBSD yet. OpenBSD seemed to have the best support for my X200. FreeBSD worked fine, but was terribly slow to resume from S3 suspend. FreeBSD couldn't resume from suspend at all, but would be great on a desktop.

@paul @sotolf@social.linux.pizza @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea ZFS is groovy. If not for the awkward licensing issues, I'd highly recommend it over btrfs for Linux

@RL_Dane @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea I don't really like the fancy filesystems, I just want something simple that works.

@sotolf@social.linux.pizza @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea Well, #OpenBSD is as simple as it gets, they don't even have Bluetooth (code was too complex/poor quality, so they removed it) or journaling! 🤣(They *had* "softdep," which I've heard compared to journaling, but removed it in the latest release because it's only well understood by one person, supposedly)

@RL_Dane @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea Yeah, I'm just not too sure how usable openbsd is on a laptop as a main machine, I've heard it's great for servers, but maybe not the best for something like tis.

@sotolf@social.linux.pizza @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea Well, I just use it on my writing machine, which is a 14-year-old Thinkpad. For a daily driver OS, you'd be losing some performance, some hardware compatibility, Bluetooth, a significant amount of Unicode support, and a lot of filesystem support, except whatever's available through FUSE. Oh, and the VM system doesn't have any hardware video emulation, only emulated serial (but there's VNC over networking)...

@RL_Dane @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea Few of those would be a big issue for me, the machine is really to weak to do emulation (other than snes and gb) and so on, but I don't know, I'll probably just stick with what I know :p but still maybe play with the idea if I get some new/old hardware :)

@sotolf@social.linux.pizza @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea 7+ year old thinkpads are dirt cheap on "FleaBay."It's a lot of fun learning a new system. I stayed up until 6 at least twice when I was first learning #OpenBSD 🤣

@sotolf@social.linux.pizza @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea ...But its great for trying out on a secondary beater machine, and I think its *very* important to learn that Linux isn't the entire universe, and not only that, the Linux way of doing things isn't the best way, let alone the only.

@RL_Dane @paul @sotolf@alpha.polymaths.social @selea Yeah, I don't know, maybe when I get some inspiration again, lately I've been rarely even having the energy to start my pc after I get back from work, so mostly it's just gathering dust :p
