Lamppost EV chargers are the answer to how you charge your vehicle in cities. This is possible because when energy intensive street lamps were replaced by LEDs, there’s excess power for charging EVs.All cities should do this. ⚡️h/t Robert Llewllyn

@jonw @evolvable @davidho You do have to switch away from the mindset of "full tank in 5 minutes" to "I'll charge when I can".I topped up friday evening while at a rehearsal, wednesday at work, etc.

@jan @jonw @evolvable @davidho there are other problems with Ev's but your reasoning doesn't work unless you only drive in dense populated areas. I drove my diesel to the middle of nowhere in Luxembourg and back without issues. I can't do that with an EV.And I resist driving in something that has cloud connections for controls 🤷♂️

@gvs @evolvable @jonw @davidho How often do you really *need* to do that (stress on *need*, not *want*)?It's not because 1 usecase doesn't work we need to throw out all the others.

@jan I live in New England. I'm in the sticks most of the time. So yes, it's a "need".Beyond that, if I live in NYC and _want_ to drive to northern Maine, that's my choice. I don't need your blessing. @gvs @evolvable @jonw @davidho

@ghast @gvs @evolvable @jonw @davidho Djeez. It was a theoretical question. No need to get your knickers in a twist. It seems to be very touchy for many people.

@ghast No, I'm saying that you're reacting on something that is not relevant. The country were both @gvs and I live is not as sparsely populated nor as big that EV's are completely out of the question. You drive whatever fits your usecase. For big distances, fossil fuels currently make sense, unless you have the infrastructure to deal with it.dr@evolvable@aus.social @jonw @davidho

So, nice you like your electric car, I don't mind. But why do you feel the need to 1/ lecture people they should have one too and 2/ should have a need and not a want to opt out of buying one?You talk about twisted knickers, what twisted yours? 😃

@gvsYeah, this is the thing. Someone can own an EV. It's fine. But you tell me that it means you're morally superior, we're going to have a problem.(Ignoring the actual other impacts of EVs)@evolvable @jan @jonw @davidho

I did not say I can't use an EV if I give up certain things. I question why I would do so and pay a lot more for the inconvience as well.Secondly, if all that was solved and they ran for 10 times my diesel and be cheaper, I still would not want one unless it could work without cloud shit.

@gvs One thing that does gets my knickers in a twist is people that decry that because their one use case doesn't fit, it doesn't fit for everything involving that thing. And you must be nuts to even try.Which is something you see over and over and over and over (on every topic)@evolvable @jonw @ghast @davidho

@janThis is a typical reversal.People don't need to evangelize ICEs.And adding "to even try" is a dying gasp of virtue signalling tacked on.@gvs @evolvable @jonw @davidho

@ghast @evolvable @jan @jonw @davidho they think it's a zero emissions vehicle, forgetting the massive amount of co2 emitted to produce it and with the ongoing closure of nuclear facilities in Belgium, the electricity comes mostly from gas power plants. In no way is it cleaner then my diesel.

@gvs @evolvable @jonw @ghast @davidho Disregarding the production environmental cost (which is horrible for all cars and worse for EVs due to current battery tech), with an EV you actually have a change of charging it off of solar/wind, which is not possible with a petrol car.

@jan"Production"? You're off your rocker. You've got a heavier car, burning through tires and ruining roads. You've got toxic batteries that are harmful and expensive. Again, that's ignoring deeper elements of that supply chain. And you're going to praise being dependent on solar and wind? Wildly unreliable and costly? (And once again, ignoring their negative impacts)@gvs @evolvable @jonw @davidho

@jan @evolvable @jonw @ghast @davidho yes and no. You can't run it off wind solar alone and the extra capacity required from the grid if most people went electric is not there. Neither in infrastructure nor production. Let alone that you'd still need gas to produce part of it. And then you have to factor in how to dispose of the cars and batteries later.

@gvs @evolvable @jonw @ghast @davidho 100% true. It's an unsolved problem.Regarding running purely of solar: a colleague of mine would disagree for the biggest part of the year, but he has quite the solar array on his house ;) But that's far from feasible for the majority of people.

@riley @davidho I think there's assumptions made that need unpacking. Yeah the original filament lamp was probably 100 to 500 watts. The led a tenth that, let's say. 500 - 50 is 450. Not enough to charge a car. But the street power run to that pole is likely 230 or 477 volts or whatever, outside the US. It's probably fused for 10 amps for safety. 230 * 10 is 2300 watts potential maximum.... A lot of power but probably a 12 or 24 hour charge time. So not so good for an hour or two roadside park charge. Also the whole streets lighting budget derives from the same circuit, so each pole, if indeed each is fused for 10 amps for safety (shorts etc) likely the street is fused/limited to N lamps times M amps with a safety margin. Bicycle chargers maybe, but they have the same charge time (slow) issues.
