My local bike shop guy heard about my quixotic quest to adapt a 40 spoke Sturmey Archer hub to a 36 spoke rim with machined adapter plates, and give me another hub to play with.It looked nice on the outside, but it did not make the expected ratcheting sound that a freewheeling hub should make when spun. It also did not work correctly. I thought maybe it would just be full of gummed up grease inside so I poured a bunch of paint thinner in there and let it sit, but that did not fix it, so I disassembled it and found it to be extremely crusty, rusty, and gunky inside.I'm going to try to make it work again, even though this hub still won't work on my bike because it's drilled for 28 spokes lol. It just seems fun to see if I can clean it up and fix it.

Before I soak these parts in evapo rust, I am degreasing them in Simple Green. This was brand new, crystal-clear Simple Green before I put the parts in there. Yuck!

The sharp eyed among you may notice that the hub is laced to a rim in that photo of it disassembled, and that it was not laced to a rim in the condition I received it. That's because there is a big retaining ring that has to be removed before you can disassemble the hub and there's no good way to hold on to the hub while you loosen that ring, unless the hub is laced to a wheel. I tried holding the hub in the pipe jaws of my bench vise and with a large pipe wrench, but the only thing that worked for me was putting it into a rim temporarily

After an overnight soak, everything looks much better and it's time for it to go into the evapo rust. Two of the pawl springs had rusted away and the other two seem like they're not in great shape, so I will have to find replacements for those

@MLE_online I bought a roll of phosphor bronze spring wire from Apex Electronics. They might have more. Random outcome though. But then you get to wander Apex which is good.

Those stupid pawl springs are 99 pence in the UK and $10 each on amazon here in the US. Ugh

@tomjennings ooh interesting. I was going to just buy some springs from the local Ace hardware and thread modify them but phosphor bronze sounds more fun

@MLE_online I once asked a spring shop owner (who regaled me with stories of springs long past) for a custom spring. He literally took a screen door spring, bent and cut it with needle nose pliers, handed it to me and charged me $7

@MLE_online @wilbr I don't know if this'll work for those, they seem too large, but I've used the springs from retractable ballpoint pens as replacements in a mavic hub.

@MLE_online @smellsofbikes @wilbr Now if you could find a clock parts store.... Omfg I was in one once, somewhere in the Bay area, it was CRAZY. I wonder if they still exist... Could be since mechanical clocks have been product-silly for 50 years.

@tomjennings @MLE_online @wilbr a friend of a friend knows of a clock place that sells new stuff, so I know how to get a first-hand second hand, third-hand.

@tomjennings @smellsofbikes @wilbr These springs are so simple that I think if I can find a spring made of the same gauge wire, i might be able to bend my own
