I've met a few eccentric/disturbed people, and it's immediately obvious why they have no close friends. They give off strange vibes and your gut feeling tells you to stay away.

@thj I’ve always been attracted to such people. I generally find them interesting, but it wasn’t until I dated a couple of them that I realized how dangerous letting them get to close to me can be.

@realcaseyrollins Vibes very noticeable to me, so I will detect subtle shifts in a person's mood. Eccentric people are off the scale to me. All the dashboard lights are lit. A lot of people talk about red flags. I don't even need those.

@thj @thj I have a guttural urge to try and put out those lights whenever I see em. After awhile I've learned that if such people could be saved by people who wanted to save them, they'd have been fixed by now.

@amyedge @realcaseyrollins Talking to your pets is super common. People somehow think this makes them weird.When I say eccentric, it's not "just being a little quirky in a cute way" that I mean. If you haven't been around mentally unstable people or people with personality disorders, it's hard to explain the feeling.

@thj @realcaseyrollins I used to be a criminal defense attorney, and I also practiced family law. I know what you are referring to, and I would call them unstable. I've sat with someone charged with murder in the forensic unit at a state mental hospital. I had a law classmate who went on a shooting spree at UNC Chapel Hill. None of those people were eccentric; they were mentally ill. Though the law classmate did look like Lou Reed.

@amyedge @realcaseyrollins Many historical figures with a reputation for being eccentric would get mental diagnoses today. There's a tendency for "interesting" people to have problems that they're hiding. The entertainment industry is full of people who are either traumatised or have mental disorders. It's rare that you meet people who are extraordinary and not also challenging.

@thj @amyedge @thj @amyedge Yep, this is why I interchange "eccentric" with "neurodivergent" in my head. I don't think there's a meaningful difference.
