@devzero Most don't see the subscription model a problem - €4,99 is merely a couple cups of coffee in a restaurant (even just one cup) - and gain is a truly Google / Apple free choice with a truly Linux mobile OS ✌️

@devzero @Linux It looks like the plan is to ship every phone with an included one-year license, and if you choose not to extend that you won't get any updates anymore. So effectively it's going to be mandatory as long as you don't plan on buying a new phone ever year.

@devzero @Sturmflut People cannot predict these things with a crystal ball right. One can always remain in the old Google / Apple paradigm if a subscription model here REALLY is a deal breaker. Buying this phone gets customer 1 year subscriptions included. One could check it out for an entire year / then decide whether continuing is honkydory 👍

@turbobob @devzero Oh you mean the price of a cup of coffee or what do you mean about making something up? Because €4,99 really is about 2 cups of coffee in a restaurant in Europe.

@turbobob @devzero Right, most don't see this a problem or a deal breaker who truly seek getting rid of the ecosystem of Google and its services. The price of this freedom therefore is merely a couple of cups of coffee, so.

@Linux @devzero Ok, so you are just making this up because you believe it is true. However your own belief is not enough to make it a reality. Then, you should rather say "I believe that most won't see the subscription model a problem", and that'd be fine.Maybe you don't see it, but there is a difference. Cheers.

@Alexmitter Well, we will see about that. Whether those blobs are opened or not, still is not a deal breaker for lovers of this product either; Sailfish OS has gained much love in mobile phone computing area.Sailfish OS is also a much more "normie compatible" alternative than anything else in the marginal - and close in simplicity to those mega corporations outings ✌️

@turbobob @devzero Sure it can be seen, now that you put it that way. "Most" means also not "absolutely everyone" - and the reasoning is naturally as explained; the aim is away from these old mega entities and the price is €4,99 :thinkhappy:

@Linux Yea, Jolla is a totally lovable company that never absolutely f*cked their paying customers over and over and over again. And I have to yet meet someone that actually liked Sailfish OS after 2013 when its awful interface already only attracted the few people that liked the N9.

@Alexmitter The challenges are huge for these tiny companies in the midst of relentless opposition and their billions (and THEIR abuse of people's information the get even more money). Remember Purism and Librem 5 for instance. They still pulled it somewhat towards a more positive note. These little players wouldn't do these things on purpose - there is not many "playgrounds" as harsh as this mobile area, right.

@Linux lol, you really licking some finish boots here. Jolla is fucked and by no means a trustworthy company and their product is, in terms of open-sourceness a joke even compared to a regular android mass production ROM. Its a bit more compatible with the rest of the linux ecosystem, but that does not help because the OS is such crappy buggy garbage that its not really possible to reap the benefits. Any random android phone with good postmarketos support is by far better in any way.

@LinuxThe problem for me with that for me is primarily, that this is encouraging even more to start with such subscription models. Until everything is only subscription based and that's it. This would for me a horrible scenario. It should be pay once and that's it, even it might be a bit more expensive in the upfront. Additional to that, nobody guarantees you that the price will be kept at the current value. See Netflix and others.

@Alexmitter The bottom line is that here is this alternative now, a true choice and those who fancy such - can get to it. The old ways and mega corpos are still there after this phone is released and one can continue with them as usual. Don't think there are many companies with a flawless pure track record in this world about this particular business. Things are not easy in the current situation - it is great to have these little "rebels" with a courage to challenge.

@devzero It can also change at one point - the point where Jolla can hold on to their ground more firmly. It is quite possible they wouldn't do this change if it wasn't almost necessary. At least for time being; to survive more likely? Who knows? Maybe Jolla is gone the next year and we'll have just Google and Apple (plus those margin options - not suitable at all for normies) - and no one to complain about Jolla's subscription model no more. Harsh but true

@Linux I don't mind a subscription at all, it's a solid way to keep developers employed. What I do have a problem with is the proprietary parts (which is more than AOSP!). Yeah they promise to open-source it, but they have since the beginning and I still don't see it.I had the first Jolla Phone for 4 years and even back then there was "the promise". I'm still waiting.

@Linux @devzero It's not just the fact that it's a subscription model. There are people on Jolla forums who would be ready to pay up to 100 euros for a one-time license (twice of what a license cost previously) but still think the new model is too expensive. If you pre-order the new 299 Euro Community phone and use it for just three and a half years, the subscription fees will already add up to more than half of the initial price of the phone.
