Is there any interesting writing on what I conceive of as "the Borland aesthetic" ?The gray frames. The blue backgrounds. Menu text with the red letter indicating a hot key. Modal dialogs with drop shadows. According to Wikipedia 2.0 in 1987 was the first blue screen version of Borland Turbo C. Did Borland originate this?

@dreid Sounds like WordPerfect 5. Not sure what WordPerfect 4 was like. Haven’t been able to find screenshots and not sure about dates. WP 4.2 seems to be 1986 and WP 5.1 is Nov 1989.

So far the most aesthetically similar things I have found are QBasic and dialog. Both of which originated in the 90s. Dialog is an interesting evolution because it creates depth by rendering boxes with 2 white borders and 2 black borders. Creating either an inset or offset effect.

@dreid I saw one screenshot of the splash screen for WP4.2 and it’s black. WP5.0 came out in 1988 so it would be after the programming tools.

@dreid Good question. DOS started it at the time, and it may have been prompted by ProDOS which was in turn prompted by GEOS and other early GUIs. Remember AppleWorks? Went full in with that aesthetic in version two.
