Bad idea that could still make a lot of money: A small desk-size washing machine, with proprietary soap packets, designed to clean keyboard keycaps.

@foone all it needs is built-in wi-fi and firmware update requirement out-of-box, and it's a viable product!

You might say "who would waste money on a dedicated appliance that only does that one thing?"But I must remind you that mechanical keyboardists are the audiophiles of typing.

@foone I’ve considered getting an ultrasonic tub for just this reason, along with floating the idea of a “gentle” rock tumbler with some suds in it. Practical? No. Smart use of existing things? Probably also no

@foone The Bob dishwasher exists, seems like that’s all the tech someone would need. Just shrink it more and maybe don’t heat the water too much. I bet it’d be very cute. Bonus points if it has dishwasher like cages to hold individual keys so they don’t go flying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVup5ya0WVQ

@foone @cabel How about some magical cloth / fluid that could restore laptop keyboards to the condition they were new? I’d pay a lot for that.

@foone When I was about 18-19 years old, I had a job where I would maintain some used computer equipment. We would clean it, thoroughly test it, repair it if necessary, and then send it out as a rental to the next customer. I used to scrub the keyboards in the sink, then wash them in a (normal) dishwasher, and let them dry for several days. Worked like a charm 99% of the time. (These had mechanical key switches, mind you.) Normal dishwasher, normal soap.

@foone I meanwe've had one keyboard since before college. It still works mostly like new.It haa slightly fancy backlighting (though not RGB, unfortunately). It feels good to type on.The keycaps are starting to wear, but they're replaceable and standardized.I call that a win.Our whole life happens on a keyboard. Why not make it a good one?

@foone I believe the standard is to use denture cleaning pellets. Safe for most keyboard materials, cheap, and pre-portioned.

@foone @KarlHeinzHasliP The wipers being single-use, to go with the proprietary, DRM-enhanced soap packs? So that you never ever have to work again (for money; you may still continue cool stuff, even after 😇)?

@foone Look, I had a keyboard from a time when mechanical keyboards were the only thing you could buy. I tried multiple non-mechanical keyboards when that old keyboard died a few years back and started missing keystrokes, plus key combinations kept landing on the wrong keys. I decided to skip the learning curve by buying the closest thing to my old keyboard and calling it a day.
