@Terry No preparations were made, he says - yet still, the Russians could not take the city quickly. Whatever the Ukis have, it prevents Russian close-air support - and Putin won't commit the resources for a decisive win.

@PopulistRight @Terry Putin is being too careful. I understand he doesn't want to harm civilians, but he could at least take out all infrastructure in the big cities, like power plants/lines, water plants, major roads, rail roads, airports etc.

@PopulistRight every single commie block is going to be converted into a fortified bunker. Kharkov isn't going to fall quickly, it will take a months long siege see: Bakhmut.

@Terry @PopulistRight I strongly doubt Kharkov will be like Bakhmut or even Mariupol.I think that Russia conducted the SMO in such a way that the most brutal fighting would be done mostly in places that were already destroyed by the 2014-2022 War in Donbass or were just industrial complexes that weren't very pretty to look at. Those industrial complexes also made for good fortifications for the Ukrainians so that might take away from my theory.Kharkov is a cultural city. Not another industrial complex like Bakhmut. It holds great importance to the Russian cultural tapestry and I don't think the Russians want to knock it down. The Bakhmut meat grinder saw to it that large swaths of the toughest Ukrainians got neutralized. Kharkov is now being defended by pampered princelings that got their daddies to bribe them into a comfy post. I don't think they have the numbers, the equipment or the grit to drag the conflict out. I think that the same paradigm will apply to Odessa if Russia decide to go for it.

@PonyPanda @Terry @PopulistRight My dude Kharkov is the definition of industrial center and fortress. Bakhmut is barely comparable in both categories. Kharkov even has a massive tunnel system designed for their historic tank production as part of the soviet defensive doctrine.

@Terry Oh, I didn't mean Kharkov City itself - that needs to be surrounded, and will be more like Mariupol - but larger. I meant the small towns to the North of it, which the Russians are fighting for now (including Liptsi) - are just South of what was the grey-zone, before this recent action. Russian forces are stuck on the edge of one, and have about 1/4 of another.
